BAYAHIBE. – The Environment Ministry (Semarena) Wednesday morning began the demolition of a nautical club built in a protected area in Bayahíbe near the Dominicus hotels, La Altagracia province.

Semarena’s demolition order was executed by its La Romana provincial offices, headed by Yuma region coordinator Andy Omar Johnson.

The official confirmed the measure to newspaper Diariol Libre and said in the documents of the structure appears the engineer Martìn Concepciòn Muñoz, representing the company Inversiones Blue Eges.

However, it was learned that Concepciòn represents Italian investors who neglected the rules and violated several SEMARENA dispositions to build two, three story structures and illegally occupied an area of the beach.

It was reported that despite being warned to halt the construction, they in fact accelerated the works.

Police agents accompanied the official to carry out the measure, including personnel of SEMARENA, which has taken several measures aimed at preventing damages to the zone’s ecology and the environment in the last few months, especially bans on constructions in and around protected areas.

Perhaps there is HOPE after all... I trust Medio Ambiente just doesn't stop there. They should continue throughout the entire country and demolish all structures that are violating Protected Areas and National Parks. Do it swiftly and let the world know there are some laws that cannot be broken in the DR.

Wow!
This must be a first: A goverment Agency enforcing its laws and regulations...WOW!

This action does show a government agency can flex its muscles. The caveat of this is that any foreign investor who pretends to disregard the law as a local would, will find himself at risk. Had this construction been that of a Dominican investor there would have been a resolution to allow the club to remain.

Don't take me wrong, I agree with what was done here, but the authorities should start looking into who gave these people the recommendation to build there. I am willing to bet it was D.R. authorities who promised free pass in return for lots of cash.

tejada,

Good call.

Good for the ministry for enforcing the laws that already exist and not allowing this to become "an allowed exception".

Now if they really want to stir the hornets nest they should go see which ones are outside of the regulations and fine them till it really hurts.

St. James, when are you going to demolish the slums on the banks of the OSAMA!

I am sure that human feces and urine plus garbage may be affecting that ecosystem as well!

Never mind the infrahuman conditions the people are living under cause you guys have never given an excrement about the poor!

But like all PLDers you never have your priorities straight

Yeah that’s right you are the guys who build METROS before schools!

Another Lie-onel in the making with a DOG and PONY show!

If I were an investor in ANYTHING, I c ertainly wouldn't invest in a Dominican Venture.
To do so would guarantee that I would lose my money.
Given the track record of the Government Officials who "Guarantee" any investment, or the psuedo officials who say they "have an "IN" in government", I would say that those who believe them deserve to lose their money, wouldn't you???

tejada and texas bill, I think both are right. I can just bet that some crooked DR official duped the hotel investors. He probably took money upfront with the promise that no problem, they could go right ahead with the project, confident that everything was fine and proceeded without taking heed to warning, until it back fired. I hope this will establish a precedent for any future foreign investors who want to rape and loot the natural resources of our country.

Hurrah !!! For David Fernandez Mirabal, though it maybe true that the PLD people have their priorities all wrong, at least this time something constructive was done. (or is it destructive) anyway, it's a start and maybe one day we will get it all straighten once and for all. Their is light at the end of the tunnel after all. Light? Did I really say that? Well, I think that is a whole other issue.

But that engineer also has a shady track record. He once blasted the PLD AFTER he was fired from a government post.

Could it be that this club (what the hell is a nautical club anyway?) was torn down because all the right pockets were not filled?

I think Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal is the only one official in the goverment that is working and making to respect the law. Others must copy his style and dont think in their pockets before than meet with their work.

Lack of trust in President's word

Guillermo Moreno Garcia's Miuca party was the leading minority political party in the 2008 presidential election (18,136 votes or 0.44%). Moreno is a former state prosecutor and Unibe law school dean. As reported in El Nuevo Diario, he is highlighting President Leonel Fernandez's lack of credibility in the run up to the proposed 28 January summit to which only the PLD, PRD and PRSC have been invited. As reported in El Nuevo Diario, Moreno said that the summit's biggest problem is the fact that the person who is calling it (President Fernandez) is known for not fulfilling the commitments he makes. He said that the President has taken part in similar meetings in the past, but does not implement what is decided, and is known for not keeping his promises. Moreno was interviewed on the El Tribunal de la Tarde program produced by Julio Martinez Pozo.

He also expressed the opinion that the government does not have the will to fight drug trafficking, corruption or crime. He said that if the will were there, Navy chief Julio Cesar Ventura Bayonet and general prosecutor Radhames Jimenez would have resigned or President Fernandez would have asked for their resignation.

wow, this is insane........you would think they would serve a notice to vacate the premises before they go and do such a thing, but to just show up and throw everybody out, another violation of the law.
