Santo Domingo.- The Dominican activist Julissa Ferreras yesterday said she’ll continue her fight for immigrants rights through the post of City Council seat for District 21, now occupied by State senator Hiram Monserrate.

Ferreras said she submitted her request last Friday and denied that the accusation of domestic violence against Montserrate would affect her campaign. "I'm running on my work and my career."

The activist from Corona, Queens, who since age 19 was involved in youth leadership in her community, said she’ll fight for housing and child care for all in her district, and the presence of more Latinos in the Police and more opportunities for women and youngsters.

Just by showing up she will do a better job than her low-life predecessor.

Devin,

Her predecessor is truly a dirtbag I agree with that. He has a history of trouble, and the latest assualt on his girlfriend was disgusting.

They are dealing with the same problem of domestic violence against women in the Dominican Republic.
400 women lost their lives last year in the hands of their partners.
Almost 30 this year already.

Td, was "activist" the right title for Julissa Ferreras?, wasn't community leader a better word.

We need people like her in the DR to fight for the human rights of all! Actually, if she were in the DR she would be labeled a trouble maker or even worst.

Gente, our struggle is for Human Rights for all!

Big understatement. This woman has been running progressive, real-results, local, city, state and nation-wide organizations beginning when she was a teen. She ran for the New York State Assembly some years back and continued to grind through the male-dominated New York, party-heavy political scene, becoming Chief of Staff of that NYC Council member, who sadly dampens this political mover's shine. Strongly recommend Dominican Today research a little more in cases such as this, where the coverage is so slight it borders on mis-information. You may want to start at WWW.JulissaFerreras.Com.

PS: Don't get me wrong. I do enjoy this news post. Refreshing.

By the way, as that NYC Councilm member's campaign manager, she was key in getting that guy elected. Rat or not, he became the first Latino elected official in Queens. A tremendous achievement. This young woman was also key in getting him elected to the New York State Senate recently.

She seems like a nice lady, possibly too nice to be in government.

I am a little disturbed with her platform, however. It seems general and simplistic; in fact, it could have been employed by any politician in DR. This is the land of opportunity and freedom, where a black man can rise to the position of president, and a black woman to secretary of state, so why not include similar goals for Latinos? Emphasizing housing and child care seems parochial and could serve to hold our position stagnant in this society.

If you were living in Queens and were a single mother or father having to cover NY-level living expenses, you would understand the emphasis on (and essential nature of) (affordable) housing and child care.

cafepilon,

Pay no attention to el cubanito, he uses leaded gasoline, and smokes four packs of "Mamboros" a day.

No you would be a promiscuous liability on the tax payers who should move to a place they can afford.

I say let's give her a chance she certainly has a better track record than her predecesser. She has my vote if I lived in her District.....

Carmen,

anthony cuckoo can "splain" to you how to vote without being in the district, they are experts in doing that in Florida you know!

Not that you would do that, but just for the curiosity.

Anthonyc, I appreciate your logic, and understand your position if you're one of those whose hope is the Republicans will some day bring capitalism to La Habana, but your perspective is limited to the point of ignorance--take no offense. Do you realizae how many Queens-based widows of fire and policemen became single parents on 9/11? No bleeding heart here, but, friend, your cynism, while it can be amusing, grows annoying. BTW, there's a difference between "nationality" and "race."

Cafepilon, I feel your pain! My family lives in Corona, near 57th Ave and Junction Blvd. I know it can be pretty hard, especially with a disable child and a husband on dialysis. My female cousin works two jobs just to make ends meet, and I send her money to help her out occassionally.
I did not intend to diminish needs of many of our compatriots; I was simply trying to raise level of aspirations, so that maybe someday we could have a secretary of state of Dominican descent. I simply wanted us to aim high and reach for the sky, so to speak, to get out of that cycle that has held us back in many cases. That was all. No disrespect was intended.

Latinos need jobs, so they can pay for their own housing and child care and most importantly make something of themselves. Those immigrants are "people" - who have plenty to offer. Maybe Julissa should work on a program to menor immigrants so they know it's ok to have a job and not depend on housing and child care. If no one educates them on job opportunites they will think its ok to never have a job.
