NEW YORK.- Dubbing it “a flower for Juan Pablo Duarte/A thorn against corruption,” the movement Citizens Against Corruption in the Dominican Republic staged another vigil to protest the malaise that affects Dominican society from top to bottom, specifically the government and the military.
The group’s second vigil is slated for Sunday, January 25, one day prior to the date that marks the birth of Dominican founder Juan Pablo Duarte, in Upper Manhattan’s square in his name on 170th Street, between Broadway and St. Nicholas avenues.
The organizers cite recent situations, including that of the ruling PLD party senator for San Pedro (east) allegedly involved in a corruption scandal in New York, and the National Lottery’s “handout” of $27 million pesos for Dominican legislators to “buy toys.”
“That happens when impunity and corruption are still being denounced, such as the pardons granted to Vivian Lubrano, the brain of the Baninter (bank) fraud of more than 55 billion pesos, and when the national dignity is still wounded by the members of the Accounts Chamber’s shamelessness of giving themselves a one million peso bonus each,” the movement said.

This is a demonstration of the Hard Working People who reside in NYC; Many who are baffled outraged at the Cavemen in Charge who know nothing but filthy lucre. Where do they get these ruffians?
Who elected these pirates who diguise themselves as Socialistas (Coca_Cola Communists) and do nothing, but pillage and loot. They don't like to work for a living if they can fool ingnorant and naive people with their rhetoric; So, they run for Political office and use their 'BA' degrees.
Then, the pillage begins! No need to punch a time clock, when you can just steal your way to wealth?

Arsenio,
What they need to do is build a fire under the rear-ends of their family members still in the DR to do the same. I am all for people earning a decent wage based upon job duties but look at how much the assembly members make in the DR and for what. That in itself is a crime.

I applaud these citizens for taking a stand against blatant corruption. Are similar actions being taken in DR? I am against all corruption, no matter who is in power. I am obviously a conservative who believes in honesty, freedom, free market economics and capitalism, and I know I will get some flack for latter, but so be it. I am sure most of the flack I will get on last comment will be from those of you residing in US who hate capitalism and won't go back to DR, Venezuela or Cuba-darn hypocrites!

the Dominicans abroad have a different approach, because they see a different reality. when they get pulled over by a traffic cop, they get a warning, or a summons; not a request for a payoff. when they pass through customs at JFK, some get flagged, others pass right through without a bag check. they never, ever, have to pay anybody off in the immigration line. the moment they enter America for the very first time, they know they are looking at something different. if they have an electrical problem, Con Edison will send a workman right away; he will not demand a "propina" to fix the problem. they do not have to pay six buscones at customs to import something. if they pass the driving test, they get their license, without having to pay the tester. if you need a passport, you fill out the forms, pay the assigned fees, and wait till it gets to you. now that they have seen this, they realise that their country is a topsy-turvy bed of slimeballs.

I would have liked to learn more about this protest, there is no mention of it on the web or any of the New York dailies or talk radio shows. I hope this is a grass roots movement that will inspire the people of the Dominican Republic to peacefully demand political change in what has to be the most transparently corrupt Electoral, Judiciary and Military system in current times. I also hope that the organizers in DR do a better job than the ones here because no one knew anything about it.
From: United States
these Dominicans abroad are the ONLY hope for the country. the people here, who are accustomed to the way things are, are the products of the culture of expediency. people in the DR, at the general level, are taught that everything revolves around opportunistic money grabs, and not basic principles of social order. so, as is the case with the current motorcycle helmet law, the average guy does not see the law as designed to teach him the need for self preservation. some politico, or his relatives, bought a container load of helmets from china, or taiwan, and wants to unload them. so, he gets his enablers in the police department to enforce the helmet law. when the helmets are all sold out, we will return to business as usual. it is a cat and mouse game, with the guys who have no helmets dodging the police for a while, till the heat is off. it is the same with everything; enforce the law when revenue or profit is needed. no wonder people laugh at laws!

Wow Dread, you have an uncanny knack for smacking reality into the way things really are. That is a great introspection and manner of seeing things as they are and not as you wish them to be.
From: United States
thank you, Devin. this is one area that fascinates me. since only some laws can generate revenue easily, the rest of the social maladies go unattended. it is too hard to make money from people who urinate in public, so, every guy whips out Mr Johnson and pees in broad view of everyone else. there are no strictures against it which have any effect. in the USA, when the cops are in a really bad mood, they will charge you with indecent exposure, instead of public urination. you are the legal luminary, so you can tell me the difference in terms of penalty, and if the charge can be made to stick. nonetheless, you do not see men taking a whizz all over new york in broad daylight. this is because it is a society which believes in social order. no spitting everywhere you feel like, because it is a health hazard. no aircraft decibel level music; it disturbs others. no all night, raucous parties; others are entitled to sleep. laws here are for making money, not for social conformity!!
From: United States, New York
While it's good the protest took place, it was in the wrong place, it should have been in DR. A better protest would have been to stop sending remittances and travels for a month, so the DR government could lose out on tax revenue. If that doesn't work, then nothing short of a full-blown coup d'etat will do.
From: United States
the problem with any kind of boycott, such as withholding remittances, is that it hurts the unintended target. if things get tight, the politicos will just take theirs first, and let the average Joe go to hell in a handbasket. come to think of it, they do that when times are good, too!

Due to technology the Internet and some good reporters it is now being brought out into the open.

sadly, Ladronaso, i am losing faith, myself. every day i see more and more incomprehensible things. i have a friend who attends university , and i asked her to bring me a copy of the monday night class handout. yesterday, she informed me that there were no classes on monday, because there was no electricity. that is not a good way to run a railroad. she says it happens all the time, with no make-up dates. how can you educate a people when there are no lights for night classes, i ask you?

This is the sort of action that needs not only to happen in NY but in Houston, Philly and Miami wherever there is a Dominican consulate or Dominican presence, it should be coordinated and it should be continued. Hopefully that fever for decent government and an end to impunity in regards to corruption, disregard for your laws (i.e. Fernandez recent pardons) and absolute disrespect for the working class men and women will bring this regime to and end and punish those who have robbed and stolen for the Dominican people.

I say not. Courage is precisely what Dominicans lack.
Courage defined:
the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear.
and or "without little regard to the consequences."
Dominicans as a whole are not courageous people. They are a peaceful, conforming and complacent people.

self importance? this coming from the guy who opens and closes every post? i just read an article by a research fellow from the Institute of Hemispheric Affairs. these are usually people who have attained high levels of academic achievement, and have their bona fides to show for it. plenty reading, plenty research, tons of methodology. guess what? some guy referred to her findings on the Dominican tourism stagnation as "BS , and hot air. yes, this guy has no facts, no academic firepower, no powers of analysis. yet, he chose to ridicule and belittle the writer, with no postulate of his own. know who this arrogant SOB was? take a guess! i might be considered self important, but at least i do not argue about the history and culture of Hispaniola with the likes of Mr Lautaro, Carlos Franco, and Cibaeno. i know my limits, and when i am out of my depth. you, on the other hand, are merely drowning..
