SANTO DOMINGO. – A war of summits is in the offing in the country as Dominican Republic’s two major political parties (PRD) don’t see eye to eye over the Government’s proposed “Living Forces” dialogue and the one announced by the loose-knit groups in the umbrella Alternative Social Forum.

For Senate president and ruling PLD party general secretary Reinaldo Pared the opposition PRD party, by supporting "another summit" contrary to the one the Government promotes reveals its “pomposity” and traditional manner of isolating itself from agreement processes. “The PRD always behaves in that manner."

He said the PRD party leaders have shown an absentee attitude when national or foreign conjunctures force the country’s leadership to a dialogue and agreement to face collective threats. “A leopard can’t change its spots and usually isolates itself when proposals are made aimed at analyzing problems and to seek some type of solution."

But as supporter of the “other summit,” PRD general secretary Orlando Jorge Mera sees the Forum’s initiative “with positive eyes,” but clarified that his party will state its position probably the same day it decides whether to take part in the Government’s dialogue, slated for Wednesday.
