Santo Domingo.– Persistent rains of medium intensity caused floods in the
north and central part of the Dominican Republic, leaving one person
dead and causing the evacuation of 1,530, an indefinite number of
people missing and hundreds of homes damaged.
Since Thursday the Emergencies Operations Center (COE) issued a green alert in those areas due to an almost stationary front. The fatal victim was identified as
a 30 year-old man, who tried to cross a stream in his motorcycle and he
was swept away by the waters.
COE spokesperson said the alert
has been maintained for 11 provinces: Puerto Plata, Santiago Rodriguez, Maria
Trinidad Sanchez, Duarte, Mao, Samana, Montecristi, Dajabon, Hato
Mayor, El Seibo and Espaillat.

That's the point "Tony the Tiger" Lie-onel is a catastrophe who has been not been able to prepare the Dominican people for these calamities because he spends THEIR MONEY on frivolous self serving projects. Meanwhile the priorities of the overwhelming majority are ignored!
It rains every year, people are exposed to the possibility of floods, well GOD DAMIT, have a short term plan of civil defense and a long term plan of flood control and permanent relocation. Is that too much to ask from the "smartest president" we have ever had, carajo!
The METRO is a grotesque symbol of stupidity and the wasting of money on everything but on the priorities we need!

In the interest of fairness and truth the problem in the north coast is recurrent and people that live near the flood lines are warned to move out and not build there and they keep doing it.
Also we are been hit hard by unusual rains and stronger hurricanes directly caused by the effects of global warning, that are mostly caused by industrialized nations.
We have been real lucky the past two years as the major hurricanes have just whizzed by and not affected us directly, hitting poor Haiti and Cuba with major rage causing death and destruction.
The major industrialized nations that cause the majority of toxic gas emissions that in turn cause global warming are responsible for this devastation. They are the ones that we should make accountable and responsible for this climatic change and they are the ones that should pay up
and send us aid and money to rebuild and be accountable for the deaths and misery they cause.

Professor,
In the meantime, the objective reality is we have and will continue to suffer from these natural events which may be aggravated by human behaviors. Nevertheless until the calvary arrives, this is a recurring problem which may get even worse, so it behooves the the Dominican ORACLE to begin to address it immediately.
Unless of course he has more pressing priorities like an Artifical Island!

professor G, be careful with that global warming stuff; you would not want to incense our resident scientist, gouletcolonial, who pontificates robustly that it is all a hoax.

inquisidor, thanks for your salutations, but there are far greater minds than mine on this board. no, in the case of GC, he takes all his cues from people who know nothing, like Rush and Hannity. none of these guys know the difference between their asses and a slice of avocado, but they have a bully pulpit with which to stupify the public. so, they have never seen the inside of a chemistry or physics lab, but they set themselves up as authorities on the subject, ridiculing guys with multiple PhD degrees. does any sane person out there really believe that Limbaugh and his ilk can read a graph?

They don't need latrines, they're only in school for three hours a day, that is the days they actually give classes.
And the latrineless culture is here to stay: there are none in the 15ish casetas on the POP malecon. I guess the urbanists and other clowns that designed it went to the no-john schools too.

you meant joint reality, didn't you? i can back up anything i say; can you? and i love how you use the word "boss". it has connotations....but seriously, there are some outsiders who need to be driven into the sea! especially the ones who hate everything dominican; the ones who sit half drunk in bars, and trash the people, the lifestyle, and everything they can think of. no constructive criticism, or suggestions for improvement. just mad at the country. to them i say "go home".

My condolence to those in mourning, hope those affected recover fast. I guess the bottom line is, that a few bone heads that visit this site aren't bright enough to actually comprehend that people are suffering , even though most of "DT" news are actually written on a 6th grade reading level (how pathetic is THAT!)

On this one, we should be easier on gov't.....they are not really responsible for occurrence of natural disasters. We have similar problems in US, where people continually build in hurricane and tornado paths, not to mention river banks, etc. They have to be bailed out every so often and sometimes not that well: Katrina! No good & obvious solution to this problem.
