Huge is a relative statement eh? We are talking some 50-60mm middle class in a nation approaching the 1B mark. Of course not taking anything from India, they are doing great things and are home to ancient cultures and history.

Non-white and non-European countries are the new emerging world powers. The question is, who will it be, who will take first place over world dominance, is it India or China, Japan maybe, an allegiance of nations possibly, who knows what surprises the future will bring. History has shown that a shift in world power is inevitable.

we need a good Indian restaurant in SD.........yum yum

Yeah GC, I surprise we don't have one already. I understand, if I am not mistaken, that their are a lot of either Indian or Pakistani students going to medicals schools in the DR.

I just got back from the festival, had some nice Indian food, had my friend's palm read and hand
tattoo with hanna, conversed with Indian ayurvedic doctors, had a good time. We do need a great Indian restaurant in the city, I second that motion.

Violinist Aisha Syed Castro, a Cibaeña who was born in Santiago de los Caballeros happens to be half Pakistani. We have already begun to see a new sazon added to our Dominican melting pot or rather salcocho. Is it possible that we will be eating "arró, bichuela y calne" along with some roti.

A few restaurants here or there is not a bad idea, as it will expand culinary cornucopia. But please look at rest of Caribbean, particularly St. Marteen, where they are well represented. Indians are industrious, very intelligent and extremely hard working, and they don't care that much for foreign politics. Outside of medicine and restaurants, however, they might not be a good fit for DR, as they are very superstitious and suspicious of everyone, which Dominicans may not appreciate. It may also be necessary to set immigration quotas, to maintain proper balance.
Just as today construction workers and mostly everyone here complaints about construction work being the province of Hatians, tomorrow everybody would be complaining about Indians owning all businesses.
We just need to plan well, then be good and welcoming neighbors. That's all.

You sound awfully selective in your immigration requirements.
Indians are good businessmen, they have a large presence in Trinidad, Panama and lately the United States. They are very smart people with high IQ's. As a matter of fact the world's smarter documented
IQ was that of an Indian scholar.
If their only faults are superstition and suspicious of everyone, well that's a lot better than the Chinese that gamble for days non stop, or the arabs that have the worse temper.
Lately there has been a great immigration to the US of many Indians cornering convenience stores,
lot's of doctors, IT professionals and others.
Dominicans love to complain about things either way, so let them.

Generoso,
Personally I have no issues with Indians, as I recognize 100 % all of the important attributes you stated.
On immigration, I believe DR is a small country with many issues. Population explosion is evident and its growth should be slowed. To preserve racial balance and related issues, I believe there should be quotas for all immigrants, just as the US used to have and enforce.
From: United States
Let's not give them all that much credit, don't forget they also run all the cheap motels in the US drive taxi cabs in NY and are the clerks at all the late night convenience stores. But of course don't you think that with almost a Billion people they would have no choice but to produce many intelligent and professional people. The mathematics and the shear numbers alone are in their favor.

Indians have been in the Caribbean for at least 150 years. They originally came to the West Indies (Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana) and worked as indentured slaves or "coolies". Well, that was then, after the Independence from Britain of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, the decendants of the people of the sub-continent have travelled the world looking for opportunities;
The Indians have a very rich culture. Yet, they sometimes still believe in the 'caste' (social stratification) system. Now, the person's profession is what determines his worth or status, not the skin tone. Upward-Mobility knows no barrier, it exists in all races!
On another note, the best Indian Cuisine that I've tasted is Moughlai Cuisine; The food style is attributed to the tastes of the (Shah Jajan) Mogul Emperors of pre-Colonial India.
*P.S. Most Indians are vegetarians since most are Hindus, or Jains.
I bet they had quite a 'Puja' tonight in SD!

manhattanite , it is a joint venture between the great ladronaso and myself. there are few greater pleasures than meeting a fellow poster in person, and sharing some good conversation. scotch bonnets are extremely hot, but not thermonuclear they just happen to have a most nutty, unique flavor. Manhattanite, try to find one of those west indian stores in new york and score yourself a bottle of scotch bonnet sauce. the liquid is bright yellow. go easy at first, and enjoy in good health. with the most magnificent soil known to man at my disposal, (the cibao valley) do not be surprised to see Dreadlocks Scotch Bonnet Sauce, made in the DR, on your neighborhood supermarket shelves. if not, why not?
