SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic faces the challenges posed by the stark global crisis in the short term, but in the long and medium term it also has the opportunity to advance its development by inserting itself in the “radical wave of transformations” he said is taking place around the world.
The chief executive, speaking in the opening of the “Summit for National Unity against the Economic Crisis" today, also announced that he’s asked Congress to postpone passing the Constitutional Reform until after February 27, as business and civil society groups had requested.
Fernandez cited stem cell research, renewable energy, genetically altered foods, and hybrid-electrical vehicles among the radical changes affecting humanity. “We are looking at those transformations that’ll enter the market sparking new riches, so we in Dominican Republic can’t waste time in inserting ourselves in that wave.”
“We need to create a new intelligence in Dominican Republic capable of taking advantage of this situation in which we have not only the optimism of reason, but also of willingness,” he said
Fernandez, who spoke after cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez and former Inter-American Development Bank president Enrique Iglesias and other personalities in the Hotel Hilton, said he’s aware the global crisis depicts certain adversities, “but united the Dominican nation well forge onward.”

The prez really confuses me. Sometimes I wonder if we are on the same planet, much less the same country. I think gmiller summed up what the agenda s/b in pretty clear terms although I might health care in there somewhere. Every Dominican knows this except the nutz running the place. This makes me sad........

Josean has got to be the single dumbest Dominican ever, and there is a steep pile of ignorance to get through. All he does is whine and whine about LF and the Metro. Sir, LF was elected by 58 % of Dominicans, whether we like it or not he is our president, you are therefore, by definition a looser, even thought I will admit that in a country filled with ignorant, lazy, slothful people always looking for the handout, you message my get thru.

Since you have all the facts, would you care to talk at length how the country was better off when the last president was in power.

What we are facing in regards to the economy is unprecedented, therefore archaic rhetoric regarding economics fixes such as "just keep it simple stupid" is irresponsible and irrelevant.

Antonio1...I am all for looking towards the future and seeing the many opportunities.
I am a one-time business owner of a very large corporation in Los Angeles who retired to this country and do not need your condescending remarks questioning my notions.
I however, live in this country and see that many things that exist in most modern nations are neglected here.
The quality of life for the average citizen is so lacking that all efforts should be concentrated on just the simple things first and foremost.
Leave the 21st century objectives to follow filling the voids in those things most nations already accomplished in the 20th century.
The DR lacks so many basics that to speak of stem cell research is an insult to those who live in squalor. Open your eyes and mind.

Just as I suspected.
The Dominican gov't was laying low during the supposed economic boom time.
But during the down turn, they will unleash their ability to stimulate the economy (not their own ofcourse), educate the people, provide basic services, and protect the masses.
Is there not one person that could at least cough (like in the ricola commercial) when these so called leaderes say something as rediculous as this?
If there isn't, I'll take the job.

Nice discussion guys. Leonel's ideas are really compatible with countries like the US and others on the G8 list. DR is a "not so poor" country if you guys look at the major metropolitan areas of the country. As a dominican living in the most advanced economy of the planet, I agree with Leonel about looking for opportunities for the upcoming boom in the world's economy. What he is really talking about is that those areas of research have to be addressed by anyone who really wants to foucs on the facts. On the other hand, the comments about the basic elements missing in DR such as permanent energy, quality drinking water and transportation have to be resolved prior to getting our feet wet on the proposed "opportunities."
