Santo Domingo.- Transport Reorganization Office (OPRET) deputy director Leonel Carrasco said yesterday that as of Tuesday Metro services would stop for “a general evaluation” but he assured that it would be put into definitive service three or four days later.

“We are going to conduct an evaluation, examine experiences, work out how many passengers we carried and evaluate the staff”, he said, while promising that trains would run every 10 minutes.

He said that the Metro, which has been running free of charge from Villa Mella to Centro de los Héroes since December 22nd so that passengers could learn to use the service, had not had any problems.

“Everything is normal, we’ve been able to test everything. There have only been some small operational problems”. He added that the construction and equipment of the Santo Domingo Metro had cost RD$25 billion. “The cost of the Metro was US$700 million, some 25 billion pesos”.

The Opret official praised the public’s “civilized and orderly behavior” on the Metro. Passengers are not allowed to enter with firearms or other weapons, alcoholic drinks, animals or food. Smoking is not permitted and children must be accompanied by an adult.

This is so well organized;

¿Y EL MAPA?

“I’ve been two days in Dominican Republic: Two days, trying to find out where in the hell the metros goes”; o en español: “Llevo dos días en República Dominicana: dos días, averiguando a dónde rayos va el metro”, dice en tono sarcástico, Obie Chastain, un turista estadounidense, extraviado por no econtrar una mapa que explique en detalle las paradas y las zonas colindantes al Metro.

Jode'an does that seem like a lot of money to you?

How much does your cost per km? in São Paulo and in other Brazilian cities with underground rail, like Rio or Brasília and Fortaleza in the future, it costs an average of US$100 million/km, though if you count only the underground sections, it would be more like US$130 million/km or more.

The new Line 4-Yellow of São Paulo will cost US$1,3 BILLION for some 11km including cost of trains and train yard.

EUR 1,5 billion for a stretch of 8,5 kilometers (not even entirely underground) in Amsterdam

The Second Avenue Subway is estimated to cost about $2 billion / mile, $1.25 billion / km!!

Santo Domingo Metro 14.5 km "The Metro will be run as an independent institution from the debt-ridden Dominican government; as such it’ll be run as a self-sufficient vs State-fund

State-funded capitalistic enterprise. If anything up to this point the cost per km constructed is a remarkable achievement to comparable international projects already built or under-construction.

It still dosen't make sense to shut down a system for evaluation.
The Metro only runs a few hours a day so it should be easy to evaluate.
There is something more sinister here than meets the eye and only time will tell.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One dollar is to much in a country with:

1. Horrible education system

2. A bring your own medicines and bed sheets hospital system

3. and one of the most expensive non-existent electrical systems.

Ok, Lie-onelita!

You can always argue education and it is a valid point in theory.

You have to be self motivated to learn and as we all know we are all naturally lazy.

If you make it easier to get to your classes and afterwards get back home in 30 minutes rather than 3 or 4 hours there is a motivating factor.

My friend and her friends that are fortunate enough to live near enough to the Metro can't wait for it to be fully operational. They say it has given them an 4 hours a day of their life back.

Now they can get to and from work and to class and still have time for their personal life.

Thats progress..
