SANTO DOMINGO. – Call it the Epiphany, Three Wise Men or the Magi, Dominican Republic’s children of all ages and social classes will be treated to toys, games and other gifts, after their parents temporarily neglected the economic crisis yesterday, rushed to the stores since the early hours in the eve of the celebration.

The large variety of prices and toys would please the kids and fit any parent’s budget, such as a toy car for a hefty RD$39,500 or a Barbie trilingual computer for RD$2,400, although a transformer puzzle cost just RD$135 or a doll for RD$300.

“El Dia de Reyes” (day of the kings), a national holiday, falls on January 6, and on this ocassion the day off was moved up to Monday.

Oh Please! it is perfectly known that only "good" kids receive the Wise Men's visit, and some low class children are really bad. Besides some people can"t even write a letter (because they don"t know how) to let these Men know what they would like to receive on this Dia de Reyes.

Don't make things so complicated and negative as adults! This day is special for children. My sister, in her part of the country, near San Cristobal, makes sure that the poorest children, regardless of nationality (Dominican or Haitian) or religion, get a little something... Colouring pencils and colouring book, candies, puzzles, cars (no not remote control!), dolls, baseball bat , clothing, etc... Many of these are things she receives from Canada or elsewhere; some are "used" but almost new. The children are so happy. We have seen some photos of last year. The look on their face! You don't need the top video game to make children happy! And even us who have more should get our children to understand this!

"Officially” the name is, ironically enough, the Dominican Liberation Party and it was founded thirty five years ago by a brilliant, honest human being called Dr. Juan Bosch.

But a bunch of political prostitutes currently led by Lie-onel Fernandez, highjack it and have turned it into a modern version of el Partido Dominicano, Trujillo's political party!

They are literally liquidating the country’s assets to enrich themselves under the guise of modernization and privatization and have bamboozled a significant number of people. However the recent scandals have begun to rip-off their masks’ and the people are begining to see them for the dangerous charlatans they really are!

My Father, Francisco Antonio Villeta, worked for Trujillos Government back in the 60's... he had to FLEE the DR to America after an assasination attempt was made on his life. The governemnt over there has always been and probably will always be corrupt. That is how i came to be born In america, however I consider myself Dominican ( just "lucky" enough to have american citizanship) . thank you for the explaination. I appreciate it. :O)

Gouletcolonial,
I was never planning a kiss..you have an active imagination or stunted maturity , you can choose. :O)
why you felt the need to jump into the middle of this conversation is beyond me.????...but then again nothing surprises me anymore. Josean has been NOTHING if not cordial and kind and accomadating towards me and my questions. so my opinion of him is high. my question toYOU is this......WHY is it you feel so threatened by him that you have a compulsive need to put him down even when you are not part of a conversation? you may want to discuss this with your therapist at your next session. :O)

Mia

Dear Mia please forgive my feeble attempt at humour ..I have been doing this for some time and everything was meant to be teasing ..if you wish to send very personal messages there is a direct mail button on this blog...If you wish to continue please be my guest but be advised I am like the scorpion in the anecdote about the frog and the scorpion who convinces the frog to carry him across the river.{google it}The internet is about freedom of speech and I firmly believe in it ....welcome to Dominican Today

I have no wish to send Very personal messages. but thank you for the insight. and I was not aware I needed your approval to "continue". sometimes people should re read their messages before hitting that send button. you sound very full of yourself.

upset is a strong word, annoyed is more like it. you did not interrupt a conversation, you just annoyed me. Apology accepted. I think we have exhausted this topic.

Mia,

Excuse Chauncey, he has been traveling a lot lately (in his mind of course, but play along as we all do here at DT) and the change of food and drink has caused a slowing of the transit time through the digestive tract, if you get my drift.

But don't worry today is Tapioca Friday at the senior residence and the nice attendants will surely add an extra dose of his favorite METAMUCIL!
