The man-made scars on the Hoyo de Pelempito canyon.
Santo Domingo. - Vice president Rafael Alburquerque and Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal today will tour the border zones which have been ravaged by Haitian migrants and Dominicans, to determine the level of deforestation in those protected areas.
Fernandez said along the border the burning of trees is common, where the Haitians in complicity with Dominicans sell the charcoal in Haiti. “To fight it we have reforestation brigades with families from both countries in border populations (Sapotén, Mencía) since 10 months ago. It’s a deep problem and we’re making contact with international organisms to establish programs which relieve the pressure on the native forest.”
Aside from charcoal, trees are also cut down along the border for wood and for firewood.
Environment ministry spokesman Mayo Rodriguez said the Vice president will tour the region by helicopter, to better asses the magnitude of the damage in areas such as the Sierra de Bahoruco and the Hoyo de Pelempito canyon.

I am glad the article places the blame on Dominican citizens as well as Haitians.......The environment is everyone's responsibility

Same story again: as long as we will have corrupt high-ranking officers that look the other way when something illegal happens, no matter what, the illegal activities will continue.

I was born in USA and my parents in DR... I feel like I have alittle bit of both countries in me and love bothe places. What would you call me American or Dominican??? When I fill out the customs paperwork I have to enter that I am Americano
From: Dominican Republic
No I do not agree with that Dominican of haitian decent is not dominican. I believe Dominican of an ilegal haitian parent is not Dominican, but if the haitian has its papers in order and has children in DR by all means the children are Dominican. If we go by that then Celso Marranzini is not Dominican because he is of Italian Decent and let me tell you that man is more Dominican than La Misma Habichuela Con Dulce.
From: United States
you are american to the average dominican. what should matter is what your family thinks not anybody else. im a little more merciful with americanos that are dominican just as long as they know that the name of the country is not santo domingo!!! LOLOLOL

just like pena gomez so i recant in that regard. i say this because that man was a true dominican. my family stood by that man because of what he believed in.
From: Dominican Republic
In the constitution it says that every son or daughter of a Dominican has the right to dual citizenship therefore that makes every single person born in the USA of Dominican Parents Dominican!

The pacifist political correct now blaming Dominican too. Indeed the if Haitians get total control of the island Dominicans will be blamed for the part of haiti too.

mirabueno,
yes there are people that always say that they are going to santo domingo but they are actually from another area of the country. Could it be because before in the old days people would fly in via SDQ? lol

I don't see the point of "touring" if they're not actually going to do something about it.

They make "carbon" and sell it for $300 a bag. I have called and written and they havent come. Maybe they dont understand my spanglish.
