The unexpected woes from the Leonel Fernandez-Miguel Vargas secret pact.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo. – While an opposition PRD party deputy Thursday defended the Constitution Revisory Assembly’s decision to curtail access to beaches and rivers, various organizations including those of the Dominican Environmental Movement expressed their indignation with the measure, which in their view violates the rights the Senate’s Environmental Commission had already approved.

Santo Domingo West deputy Andres Henríquez said he agrees with limiting access to the beaches to protect the tourism industry, since “barrio mobs" would enter the resorts and would even make use of the snacks and buffets.

He said since the country depends on tourism, the National Assembly did what it had to do.

The environmentalists however slammed the legislators’ attitude as irresponsible and called the agreement by the heads of the opposition and ruling parties on the Constitutional reform, “the Fernandez-Vargas pact.”

“The assembly members’ attitude to eliminate free access to all beaches and coasts, access to water sources, the right to develop the natural resources and the value of the landscape constitutes a mockery to the people who chose them,” they said, adding that instead of serving the environmental interests of the great majorities, they denied the legitimate rights of each citizen.

The Assembly reverted the citizens’ right to access beaches and other water sources, bowing to pressure from the tourism industry and the leaders of the PLD and PRD parties, Leonel Fernandez and Miguel Vargas.

Now here is a REAL DOMINICAN to be proud of, maybe even a member of the “barrio mobs" that should not be allowed on their own national beaches:

One-legged golf star is Dominican

Golf is hard enough when you have two legs, but imagine if you only had one. This is the reality of Dominican Manuel de los Santos, who is taking the golf world by storm, despite the fact he has a real handicap. The 25-year old rising star had his leg amputated after a car accident when he was 18. He has opted against using a prosthetic leg and walks around the greens on special crutches. A former baseball prospect, de los Santos now dreams of conquering St. Andrews and will play at tournaments there and at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

Are you listening LIE-onel Fernnadez !

So...give me the Readers Digest version of all this.

Punta Cana's beaches are no longer public but under the control of a resort?

No resident of Bavaro is now welcome on the beach...just paying resort tourists?

Last I heard...if you are Dominican, you share the same rights, regardless of financial standing or association.

Can we now expect that the wealthy Dominicans of Bavaro are as welcome as the "bario" Dominicans who on occasion like to take their families to the beach?

This country is out of control. What this country needs is a Fidel Castro ( A REAL MAN WITH REAL BALLS) to turn things around. I read all this garbage on a daily basis and the trash stinks more and more every day.

There has been no real thought on the part of the politicos of the result of their vote. What has happened now is that the owners have a carte blanche authorization to do whatever they want to protect their beachfronts, meaning that a security guard, (vigilante) , can and will use deadly force to stop unauthorized public from encroaching into these areas. Now it is only a matter of time before we read a news report of someone having the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Did you ever clean up, week-end by week-end the trash, the feces, the garbage, the bottles, glass splinters, needles, etc
so the clients could use the beach safely?
Rights and freedom come with responsibilities.
No one has a right to pollute and destroy the beaches, not even the Dominicans.
Who mentioned Fidel? Cubans have no access to certain beaches without permission...

I'm glad you see the big picture,I guess most don't. The business interests who push for this did it to protect their establishments from those they consider as" the barrio Mob" by any means necessary. If they kill a few of you in the process guess what under your constitution they are within their right. The F^^&*Up part is your government have no shame and sanction this.

People like ALLNUT, HRBIC and Cisneros, feel DR is a nice place if it only wasn't for Dominicans, or how the PLD refers to its countrymen/women "barrio mobs!"

It is not dread or I who want to drive the investors into the see it these carpetbaggers, interlopers with their hired local political help who create laws and conditions to drive the "barrio mobs" into El Canal de La Mona, so they can re-colonize our country!

Why doesn’t Mr. Cisneros go and fight for his rights in his native Venezuela, because he could not get away with those crimes there, that’s why!

Duh. Have you ever seen a beach late Sunday after Dominicans have been their all afternoon? Garbage, piles of shit (literal) styrofoam plates, plastic cups, empty booze bottles. An aweful mess. I say let the hotels have the right to protect the area in front of their hotel and keep it clean. When the locals start picking up after themselves (in maybe two generations) then think about changing the policy!

"This doesn't give them right to pollute and destroy the beaches!'

HRBIC,

Your right; nor does it give the corrupt politicians the right to give the Dominican masses's national patrimony to domestic or foreign private ownership.

The obligation of the government is to educate people so they learn to safeguard their natural resources and the beauty of the environment.

Apparently some people including Dominicans, have a disdain for the less fortunate among us and feel they are incapable of handling their own affairs, or of learning how to! It is a paternalistic attitude toward Dominican adults of humble means essentially treating them like children that must be led by the more affluent, even at the expense of violating their constitutional and human rights, because the wealthy always know best for them.

That sir is unacceptable to me; as it should be to you as well, if you really have so much love for Dominican people and not just condescending and paternalistic feelings!
