SANTO DOMINGO.- An overheated main fuse halted service in Santo Domingo’s Metro for the second time in less than one month, when for more than 20 minutes during which panicked passengers rushed out of the station next to the Ozama river.

Transit Reform Office Assistant director Leonel Carrasco said the subway’s electrical system is safe but not infallible, calling today’s incident "bothersome" for passengers, affirming that in no way endangers passengers lives.

He apologized to the straphangers for the mishap and said they should get used to those types of faults occurring sporadically.

An electrical glitch also halted service on September 25.

While some of us may object to the financial extravagance the METRO represents, this type of malfunction should be considered an extraordinary occurrence. This is a complicated system and glitches are to be expected-even in the most modern western countries. I am just surprised this did not occur sooner.

do you just whine all the time or can you actually take the time to make a state that has head and tail so people can understand. WOW you must have won the BWA or the Biggest Whiners Awards. Please cut down on the whining and put some effort in making a full statement. Damn at least do that for your e-image.

This is so sad but I can't stop laughing.

Who said this happens all over the world? You care to name a time that this happened everywhere else in the world?

What a bunch of BS! How many incidents like this will it take Dominicans to NOT ride the rediculously expensive train that goes only on one avenue?

Sorry Belly, I know how tough it is to connect the dots.

1) All subways do NOT run on a 12 volt energizer bunny battery
2) Next time this happens. If the passenger ‘panic’ and go onto the tracks to escape.
3) Some ill educated Dominican switches the electricity back on.
4) High probability people will fry.

Have you ever ridden a subway?

This is hilarious......Dominican engineering at it's finest.....I'd love to know the EE that drew up the plans........I bet he figured a blwon fuse could be replaced using empty Presidente cans or knife blades like the chopos uses to jump the meter sockets at home........

But hey, let's build some roads on crappy road beds and a dam....the IMF (Ignorant M Fers) will give us more money that we'll never pay back.

Can you quite being a pessimistic drama queen? Why in the world would people run on the tracks to escape when they can head out the way they came in? Even if they did run on the tracks NO one would "fry". The Santo Domingo subway is powered via overhead supply. Reading your posts is really becoming a chore, I'd atleast give you credit if you had some truth to your arguments. Now that that's all done and said let me add that this does indeed happen in other world subways. People dying from this is VERY unlikely. Either way, its unacceptable and a solution must be found immediately for the sake of the subways efficiency and image.

Strap hangers???? WTF???

So those in the "safe" overloaded Corollas and Unknownavans the clog the streets are what....doorholders???? Wait...I stand corrected...many have no dorrs.

Jeez...and we worry about a power failure on the Metro.

Tell you what...I will take a subway with sporatic power failures over a bald tire, no doors, overloaded road-wanderer anyday

This is really scary, have any of you gotten stock due to power loss on the #1 or #2 or any other nyc subway lines. Even though it is often short, but it is dark as hell in there. These poor people most have been horrified.

One I most admit is that this is an incredible BLOW to the LI-ONEL government. People will lose the little faith they had in such system.

Helen, the term straphanger, has been coined by NYC subway riders. You see the subway cars have these hanger, that actually you hold on for your dear life when you do not have a seat. At one time during the development stages they were made to look like straps that you could hang form it. I hope that i was CLEAR, this is something that you must see to fully understand the term. But i hope you get the picture.

Dagtan, thank you for the explanation! I know exactly what you mean. Trains and buses in the UK had 'straps' to hold onto before they introduced the metal poles running the length of the carriage or bus. Thanks again.

First of all to clarify the issue, it was not a power failure , it was "overheating" which I find to be kind of funny, how the heck does that thing overheat?? Does it have a radiator? Did someone forget to add coolant?

The thing only runs for like 10 hours a day and its not like its overloaded with people.

Secondly, This wasn't built by Dominican engineers, if it was they would of probably accounted for all the problems they know existed, the contract was actually given to a European company. As they always do instead of training qualified personnel they sub-contract out to people who have no idea of the country's climate and terrain, they pay a huge Gov. contract and skim 30 to 40 million off the top.

Lastly, Its not that we hate the METRO we recognize we need mass transit, but seriously the thing was built w/o much planning, and without zoning restrictions, its going to be even a bigger mess to get feeder lines.

They should of got rid of those pesky buses and made one D.O.T for the whole country it would be easier to control and much more helpful to the community and environment.

I've ridden public transportation there and I've been in a bus where the driver hit a person and just kept on driving.

Those type of malfunctions do happen once in a while but as we all know this is going to be the tip of the iceberg, why?

DR doesn't have an MTA or subway authority to respond to malfucntions 24/7 when they need a train mechanic they'll have to import one from another country. I'm sure they trained one or two people so that they could change a few parts but still the metro's engine didn't have stress test done in our weather, Leonel wanted to monumentalize himself and he did it by building a monstrousity that runs on a line to the poorest sector of the country.

Now if it would of went from the 27 de Feb. Avenue to like San isidro, or to La Charles DeGaulle I would of maybe been more of f

IronThinker, look at the new SOUTH AFRICAN SYSTEM. this should be a model for the DR, since it is one of the last D.O.T. system built in a large scale. I know, I know the DR is tiny to be compared to S.A., but logic and efficiency sees no size.

Ironthinker,
Word of CAUTION never ride public Transportation if possible....a years back a Friend of mine was picked pocketed and didn't realize it until he exited an hour later. When in the DR your better off renting a car or have family members and good friends drive you around....my motto is when in doubt hit the horn and step on it.

Dogtan,
This is the DR remember, things are a lot different. The DR should of dumped the Metro and went Monorail....much less maintenance and cost effect. I call the DR metro a "Mole Patrol in the hole" with a disaster waiting to happen.

Bernies...

I was born in NYC and Lived there many years. NEVER once did I ever even HEAR about this when I lived there. I use to take the Train from 86TH and Broadway at 7:45pm and be in Madison Square Garden watching a Knick game after negotiating my ticket from a scalper at 8pm. I even Remember Lou Al Sinder playing before he became Kareem Abdul Jabar. At the Garden all you could hear was "LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU" all night long. NY is a tough town to play.

Took Subways all the time when I lived in Manhattan. Best way to get to any part of the City unlike the DR which only travels on one Street. We also had 24 hour electric and potable water which is FREAKIN AMAZING, right?

This was a BAD idea and I believe it will last as long as our new streets last here which is NOT LONG because they don't maintain them. Ever see a new street sealed after a year? I never have and that is why they have a life span of less than 5 years.

MRios,
thank you for the word of caution, I'm very careful when ridding public transportation, I only went from the "San Vicente" to the Olympic center b/c I had practices there, but I never carried more than what i needed for the ride and maybe a gatorade :).

Still I hate being afraid of travelling in my own country I was born and raised in DR and I've had some good times and bad times but still after all that's the land that gave me life and sustained my family.

And even though I'm also an American I would give my services to protect her from her enemies ( specially the domestic ones).

Its too bad that when someone wants possitive change they automatically become enemies of the state and its patriarch.

I'm not involved with the PLD or the PRD all I want is to stop the suffering of my people that's been going on for so long, and I'll do whatever I have to do to achieve that...

IronThinker,
I was also born in the DR but raised in California all my life where all we had to deal with was smog and heavy traffic. I never rode any sub-way, but in earthquake Country the though of being underground traveling 50 + MPH I could never ride. In my opinion the DR should of went the Monorail route. All that money wasted..........
Just so you know on your last posting I AGREE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY.
