SAN JOSE DE OCOA, Dominican Republic. - President Leonel Fernandez’s security detail on Thursday arrested the journalist Jose Manuel Calderón for demanding several works for the province, the first such abuse of the media in the leader’s three terms in office.

The journalist, who was taken to the rural police station, was detained after he handed out leaflets prior to the chief executive’s arrival, in which he demanded works for his town.

Calderón was held for three hours and affirmed having been physically mistreated by police agents while in the precinct. He was released minutes after Fernandez’s departure, after inaugurating a housing complex

However, the journalist of the local Channel 12, said despite his arrest he’ll continue to demand the construction of several works such as highways, local roads and homes, which the chief executive himself had promised for the province.

Calderón’s arrest in the barrio Villa Progreso sparked his colleagues’ reaction, who demanding his immediate release and expressed their concert of reprisals against him.

this will turn out to be a mistake and will lead to nothing but bad publicity......arresting journalists is more Raul and Chavez style than democratic .......is there more to this than meets the eye or was he just ruining a photo op for the Prez

jim,
Truillo does not live in the heart of LF. If it did, we would not have the out of control illegals in the country problem

Our President has been getting a little too freindly with Chavez and Castro. These actions are something they would do. We need to get control back over our government or we will be the next Cuba or Venezuela which will not help us economically or get us out of the dark ages (literally too).

LF was Balaguer's understudy, and Balaguer was the political mastermind behind trujillo, its like he never left.

I hate that Moron, honestly I would run for president over there but i'm too honest, I'd probably get assasinated the second i took office.

I love my country but I can't stand its people!!

Story doesn't seem to be complete...but the timeline of his arrest and release coincide with fernandez's arrival and departure so it was clearly orchestrated to remove any potential embarrasment to the L. I hope the press ptakes this and presses adn presses until it becomes an international embarassment for L.

En cada dominicano hay un poco de trujillo. Leonel payed homage to Balaguer to get elected the first time, maybe he wants to be cacique/caudillo for life.

I doubt if the President would have been aware of the incident at all but seems the police were a little heavy handed ,,Was this journalist arrested and if so what was the charge but seems as if he was only detained.
Maybe the police just wanted to be sure of an peaceful time and overreacted ..every politician gets used to some heckling and I think it is like water off a ducks back ..so do not think that Leonel is to blame for something he may have known nothing about

It's the police. They're an independent gangland force full of their power. No one dares control them.

Local officials and police tend to overreact whenever a big fish is coming to their little part of the country. Streets are suddenly getting sweeped, garbage collected, water supply is restored and electricity is 24 hours. Protesters and other unwanted individuals are kept off the streets, sometimes in a forceful manner. As soon as the big fish leaves all is back to normal.

I think the real issue should be that citizens are not allowed by the police to protest or distribute leaflets. This individual clearly was not practising journalism when he was detained, but it got the attention because he happened to be a journalist and not it's getting twisted into a story that the president is detaining journalists.

The LIE-onelita apologists are in full bloom today.

Everything good that happens in DR Lie-onel Fernandez he is absolutely responsible for, no matter how minute or mundane.

But a journalist that gets arrested because he was going to confront his majesty with his lying promises and draw attention to the abysmal government he is leading and Lie-onel is total unaware and oblivious.

They only thing he is oblivious to is the suffering he has brought on the overwhelming majority of the Dominicans and the missing 180,000 daily riders on the METRO!

No matter how much you Lie-onel lovers try, you can’t make a silk purse out of sow’s ear!

ok, Ricardolito, let's try this on for size. you opine that Fernandez did not know what was being occasioned by "rogue officers". let us say you are right. then let us see what he does to correct this action. surely, you realise that the eyes of the world are on events such as these, which can have very debilitating effects upon the relationship between the DR and the so-callled "free world". now, will the fearless leader call in the area police captain, and tear him a new a--hole for harming the image of the country abroad? not to mention at home? or will he offer him a promotion?

I have never said rogue cops but they may have been overzealous and I imagine that the President would have asked for a full report of the matter and after. reading it ,he will take appropriate action .
I have not seen any mention of the incident anywhere else in the world news so guess editors think it is not really newsworthy

Another slap in the face for Ricky's hero, LIE-onel Fernandez!

Maybe he will have the judge arrested too!

"SANTO DOMINGO.-El presidente de la Junta Central Electoral (JCE) Julio César Castaños Guzmán, se opuso hoy a que en la nueva Constitución de la República se prohíba el derecho de los dominicanos a disfrutar de las playas y otros recursos naturales."

etiennce01, i am fully aware of the fact that you are perfectly within your rights to post anything you like, as long as it squeezes within the boundaries of good taste, as decided by the moderator. however, do you have any intentions of offering anything educative, illustrative, insightful, or, at least, amusing? i mean, how many times can you post anti'leonelosis before it gets threadbare? we got the point the first time. i am sorry, but i bore easily.

Leonel bashing?

How about the bashing the Dominican constitution is taking and therefore the rights of the Dominican people:

An attack on freedom of the press and arresting reporters,

Article 30 of the constitution Taliban inspired and creating the Dominican Ayatollah,

$750,000,000 dollars wasted on useless METRO with a $25,000,000 dollar subsidy, just to assure his reelection,

The illegal, still unaccounted for $130,000,000 dollar Sun Land loan,

The pardoning of criminal convicted bank embezzler,

There terms in office and crime is worse,

Drug trafficking is worse,

Education is worse,

Electrical service is worse,

Privatizing our beaches,

So who is bashing who? Give me a Break!
