SANTO DOMINGO. - A National District court invalidated the rental contract awarded without a bid for the Hotel Montaña in Jarabacoa (central), from a lawsuit filed by the Dominican Alliance Against Corruption (ADOCCO).

The 2nd Civil and Commercial Court ruled for the challenge filed by ADOCCO coordinator Julio Cesar de la Rosa, a decision he said is a milestone ruling in the fight against corruption. “Corruption has found refuge in officials who don’t respect Law 340-06 on Purchases and Contracts for Goods, Services, Works and Concessions, for which we recognize and hail the decision.”

Court ruling 00680/09 of August 17 voids the contract between the government agency CORPHOTELS) signed by its director Freddy Majluta and the company PAREATIS, S.A., represented by Jose Feliz Cabrera.

According to the 35 year contract PAREATIS, S.A. would pay a monthly rent of US$2,000 starting on the 10th year, which led ADOCCO to file charges in 2008, considering it detrimental for the State.

There's no difference. It doesn't matter who's deal it was. They both make the same kind of abusive (to the pueblo) deals. And anyone who thinks that this ruling isanything other than an aberration should think again.

This could be a tough one to call. On the one hand, maybe no one is rushing to invest in this endeavor due to high risks, and fast changes taking place in tourism industry, which might not be positive. In which case these investors would be getting government subsidize property to promote and develop, with taxes and rent delayed for a decade. Perhaps this could be only option if no other investors offer better deals to Dominican people via open bidding process.

On the other hand, we are so used to getting screwed by all, that we smell a rat and there might be a whole pack. In Dominican politics, it would not shock me to see a whole bunch of politicians being in on the deal-raping the nation! This is a clear conflict of interest, and they, nor their immediate relatives, should be allowed to participate in this endeavor.

Pepe,

It will be hard to recover any credibility from above comment stating that Hippo was your friend, at least in this forum.

Wow..I'll be surprise if I don't get attack just because of my last name!!

ALL politicians are corrupt or must have the qualities to be....politics is an ugly business and even if you start with good intentions and you are an honest man/woman the system will corrupt you...if not someone will eventually put a hit on you!!

No matter who's deal it is, it is WRONG!!
