JIMANI, Dominican Republic.- Air Force helicopters sent to the area Loma El Bejuco, site of the murder of four Haitians who were burning trees to make charcoal, retrieved the charred remains of their bodies and flown to the local hospital Friday morning to conduct autopsies.

Army soldiers of the 5th Brigade based in Barahona found the four bodies in the section Pinos del Eden near the town La Descubierta, a rugged area reached only on horseback, and radioed the helicopters which arrived to recover them, said Independencia province prosecutor Ruddy Perez Medrano.

He said arrest warrants have been issued for four Dominican farmers who allegedly murdered the Haitians, who according to a survivor were chopping down trees to make charcoal when the aggressors arrived.

Perez said Haiti Police official Daniel Laffront was asked to take part in the probe, whereas Army general Joaquin Virgilio Perez has been instructed to search the region for the suspects, also said to be cattle ranchers who attacked the Haitians in reprisal for the burning of the forests along the border. He said he’s also been instructed to determine if some military are involved in the deaths.

The official, who discarded that incident would spark tension along the border at Baoruco and Independencia provinces, added that forensic specialists arrived in Jimani from Azua Friday morning to conduct the autopsies. “I don’t believe the incident would lead to tension in the region because both Haitians and Dominicans consider it an atrocity.”

However, reports affirm that Thursday’s market at Jimani was suspended after the incident and that Haitians prevented Dominican trucks from entering Haiti through the nearby border crossing at Malpasse, although transit was restored by Friday morning.

Burning trees=killing people anyways. Have you ever heard "kill one, save a thousand". to live, you need a healthy ecosystem, to have a healthy ecosystem, you need to give conscience, and if they don't listen, they will have to feel. So baldoria123, the biggest savages are the ones cutting the trees more so than the executors. WHY?, because they are both cutting trees, and killing people of the future generations, just like the Haitians of many decades ago are costing Haitians of today their homes every time a little 4-hour rain falls.

what the heck are we going to do when there is no shade? All the land and rivers drie up, the junk cars keep polluting the air and no trees to filter the air? Food will become expensive since the whole island will have to import food and water. The poor will die in the future because of this.

I agree with everything you said, we all know the repercussions however let's stop the hypothesis and deal with the present situation these trespassers could have been arrested and order to replant all the trees for a year, or forced labor ect and deported. NOTHING CAN JUSTIFY A KILLING OF AN UNHARMED CIVILIAN. iF it's the image you want to create worldwide, and give more ammunitions to the AfroNazi then go head and keep cheerleading such horrendous act.

Xwill7, I disagree with you, you shouldn't shoot someone just because he wants to steal your dog in your backyard. He probably has a hungry family to feed. A dog is not worth a human life, not even if the absence of that dog will allow perpetrators into your house for there not being a sort of barking alarm. Remember: Bad fences make good neighbors. You have to share your dog and your family's safety with everybody, because Jesus told us in the new testament to love everyone else, but he never went to the synagogue that had been turned into a commerce center to flip tables over and kick them out. He never did that.

i am not saying that killing is the correct method. All I ment is that the people in DR are tired of no action. Not just on the border. The system is broken when people have to go out on the streets and burn tires in order to have 24/7 electric power.

Boy this is getting more interesting by the minute. When the news was first reported it seemed as though these guys were breaking the law for cutting down a tree to make charcoal and in reprisal were executed. However, it seems as though it is not quite that simple and it appears to be much more to it then that. It is believed that "some military are involved in the deaths." This seem like an more logical explanation. Why would Dominican civilians want to take the forestry laws and carry out extrajudicial killings in their own hands? I don't think so....... A more likely scenario might be a mob attack because of some personal, direct and conflictive incident between a Haitian and a Dominican. But execution style killing in a remote area of the DR involves other issues that have not been clarified

USA,Canada and France have killed over 4,000 Haitians since 2004 in Haiti can we start the jailing process for those first because the crimes were committed before this one and why isn't the always "justice for all" USA prosecuting anybody but hey you are a American so you can let those things happen but DR can't even protect their land because that just pissed you off real quick. Can i call you Mr double standard from now on. como dicen alla el burro ablando de oreja. 4000 x 15 years of prison is 60,000 years of jail time when will you push your gov to start the process to put your criminals in jail. hey at least within 2 days of the crime we know who committed the crime and are looking for it but USA 5 years later haven't even started looking for their own criminals. Once again DOUBLE STANDARDS.

You see the Haitian mentality and mode of mind!!?

The Haitians are poor and hungry? They rip off Mother Nature, now Mother Nature in ripping them off by not giving them food. So for these Haitians advocates/Dominican Haters they believe tat since Haitians are hungry and poor it is ok for them to come to a different country and kill their natural resources.

Well I got new for you, with trees killed so goes a complete ecosystem living out of those trees.
It takes a tree (if survives) 15-25 years to mature and generate enough compost to feed the soil round it. Mature trees provide shelter for birds who feeds on the insects that make this tree their home and that help decompose the fallen leaves on the ground.

Popon, the Haitian desert exists because of that very mentality ,they destroy their environment then their land becomes barren then as destitute people they continue to destroy what's left because "they are poor" and the downward spiral continues ,then a small rain shower comes and sweeps hundreds to their death bringing disease and more poverty.

Now the locusts are moving east and threaten to consume the greenery on our side but they complain if Haitians are deported and complain if laws do not reward them for illegal trespass and in all cases it us evil, racist Dominicans who are not letting them survive ,I mean they are poor and they need the charcoal to cook and we don't want our trees cut down ...we must be evil !!

4 Haitians are killed (not good) but how many are killed in Haiti by Haitians? Why must we be the ones to carry the burden of Haiti's failures?

The D.R. as it stands today is in danger of extinction, wether we like it or not the island is a defacto one state nation, because Haiti is not even considered a country by any standards. I had the opportunity of visiting D.R. about two summers ago, and the country is literally Haitianized. Thank god i don't live there, but like my uncle that lives there says "este pais se jodio." I give it 25 years from now until you start seeing the brightest and well to do Dominicans in fleeing the country, as usual as in the past things tend to repeat themselves.

I have to agree with manolin

The mass migration of hungry haitians is our problem, we are the ones that can stop the bleeding, they(the haitians) come into DR to survive, is our laws they breaking, Leonel and his 40 ladrones are more preoccupied with making money and projecting power than enforcing migration laws.

There are powerful interest that are been protected and financed with cheap slave labor from haiti , and we as a society are doing nothing to stop it, this killings are a brutal remainder of what can happen if nothing is done to stop the predation of our natural resouses.

we should look in the mirror and think this:

Do we have enough resourses to protect the border and stop the illegal charcoal trade? YES

If yes WHY is this happening?

who is taking advantage of illegal haitian labor?
those are the reaL culprits

Son nuestros lideres que estan dejando que esto pase, que haitianos entren y salgan como perro por su casa, la pregunta en hasta cuando?

misshaiti:

Are you lesbian by any chance??

Your mind is crossing some weird boundaries right now since one thing is defending your group of chimpies and the other is to acknowledge that We Dominicans are not a bunch of sissies!

According to my sources the "modus operandi" indicates that the people that killed your 4 monkeys were Haitians too so let's wait for the final report before your mind full of dirt cookies
reacts like a toilet full of Hmmm !!1

Where can I contribute to their legal defense fund. Some Dominican protesters cut down a very large tree on my modest property and other peoples trees/properties to block the road to protest the bad roads conditions. Had I been there to see it there might have been a death or two.
First thing to do is: do not to hire a Haitian unless your happen to be doing your business in Haiti, Second is: to boycot Haitian vendors of what ever type.
Finally in Haiti itself this vary thing would have occured to the Haitians at the hands of Haitian land owners.

Fellers, just to get the story straight here, it is Dominican ranchers who commission Haitians to cut trees and make charcoal. They also allow them to make conucos under the stipulation that the the Haitians will plant grass when done. This allows them to avoid blame for violating conservation laws that prohibit the cutting of the dry forest. They also use the Haitians to put up barbed wire fences because they work cheap. So for those who think that people who destroy trees should be killed, then you should be advocating killing Dominican ranchers, not the Haitians. For my part, I don’t advocate killing anyone. Just lawful enforcement of the law.

I am glad to see this topic has brought out the reality for all.

We are all human and killing people for anything is not an option. Not in a street fight not in a dominican forest. We all strive to be better this we call civilization and this is why we have laws. Those amoung us who have not reached that level of civilization advocate murder.

The responsibility of protecting a countries border is that of its government. They also have a global responsiblility to protect the environment. That the dominican gov. is not doing its work well this is not news but instead of bad mouthing each other why not rise above the old situation of who is the better people , talk about a realistic soulition.

Sad to say but neither country is in very good condition on all levels and Dominicans must realise that they are not so far away from ending up as haiti. Bad leadership is what got them to where they are today. Both depend heavily on global aid Hispanola must be shared as neighboour
