New York.– An employee of the Dominican consulate was sentenced in a Manhattan federal court to 20 months in prison for smuggling into the country Dominicans who posed as members of his family, the site blogs.villagevoice.com reported.

While working as a clerk at the consulate, between October 2007 and July 2008, Francisco Estevez made an average of two trips per month to the Dominican Republic to recruit people who paid him US$10,000 to be smuggled into New York. In less than a year, he brought in 25 people, using fake passports and A-2 visas.

Because he had a diplomatic visa, Estevez and his family were able to travel in and out of the U.S. as often as they liked. They also bypassed security procedures - like having digital fingerprints taken and their photographs collected.

One one occasion, Estevez gave a woman his daughter's passport and accompanied her from the airport in Santo Domingo to Newark-Liberty International Airport, where she was picked up by family members and taken to the Bronx , prosecutors said.

It's not known whether the people Estevez smuggled are still living the country, or how immigration officials were tipped off to the scheme.

That's the way a criminal system is supposed to work. Do a crime, get caught, go to jail, do the time.

I don't know what the Federal sentencing guidelines are for this type of crime, but 20 months sounds too low to me. I see people going to jail for a year for just having a forged social security card or "green card" . In my opinion, they were too lenient with this ophidian miscreant.

We've should all have come to expect this.

Being a Dominican diplomat means nothing. Most of these individuals lack qualifications for the job and are a total embarrassment to the country. Their assignment is typically in compensation for political campaigning and cronyism.

I've personally spoken to a vice-consul who was not very intelligent and spoke like a "campesino", in improper and street Spanish [Dominican]. You know, terms like Nueva Yoi. They produced a "power of attorney" document for me that was full of error and wouldn't correct it.

Anyway, this situation doesn't shock me at all. It is simply further evidence of how we are regressing to Neanderthal status, facilitated by present gov.

Ok, I could see him getting past Dominican immigration in the DR, but how the FK did he get past the US immigration with things like using his daughter's passport to smuggle in a woman? Does this mean that US Immigration Officials are still intimidated by international diplomat visa holders? I thought all of that ended back in 9/11

Has not ended yet you still get a free pass with a diplomatic passport, and as far as who was in charge, leonel or anybody else, would have happened and did happen under any president here.

Listen to some of these posters and you might get the idea that the burro was better gag gag. And lets always remember that Balaguer made it on 8000 pesos a month as president jajaja.

Blutarsky - "...corruption at the consulate .?......." probably not. As an employee of the consulate I would be surprised if he ever even went there. That's the funny part !

You could smell all the scam artists in the back rooms making deals in this NYC office. I once paid a visit, I can't remember what the @*#^^#&... for. But when my turn was up to go meet with a clerk in the back, it felt like I was walking thru a corridor of corruption.... what a !&%%# matrix that was.
