SANTO DOMINGO.- Interior and Police Franklin Almeyda warned Sunday that there are jurisdictions where the common criminals, popular groups and drug trafficking work in a coordinated manner.
He said they try to create in those sectors networks similar to those which operate in Central America and Colombia, for which law enforcement agencies “will proceed with a very heavy hand” against them.
The official said Navarrete, Bonao and San Francisco are some of the municipalities where the authorities have uncovered links between traffickers, common thugs and the popular groups.
Interviewed by Héctor Herrera on Telesistema Channel 11, Almeyda said the same occurs although of sporadically, in the capital’s sprawling Capotillo sector and in Licey, in Santiago.
He added that in the kidnapping of the youngster Eduardo Baldera there was a bit of everything, because in his view the people linked to popular groups, criminals and micro-trafficking took part. “That occurs very frequently in Central American countries and essentially in Colombia, but our territory’s unique characteristics make it difficult for that criminal practice to take root in the Dominican Republic.”
