Santo Domingo. - The National Academy of Sciences today on Tuesday asked the commission of UN’s Program for Development (UNPD) which conducted a feasibility study for a cement plant near Los Haitises National Park (northeast) to present the results of its investigation.

Academy director Nelson Moreno said the one month term the UNPD requested to widen the probe has already expired the a that was ruled to conclude in the third week of September.

Moreno, together with the academicians Luis Carvajal, Osiris de Leon and Luis Scheker and the environmental team’s legal adviser Juan Bautista Diaz reiterated their opposition to the cement plant.

The organization, which presented the 8th edition of its magazine “Verdor”, list the ecological and scientific reasons why they say the work cannot be allowed in that region.

As to the UNPD’s report Diaz said if the results turn out to be favorable for the cement plant the international organism would create a conflict of sovereignty, for which he expects it to go against the project.

Work on the plant were halted in August and until the PNUD renders its report.

I don't understand why they let the UN conduct a study of the impact this plant is going to have on the environment, when they(our government)actually know it is harmfull to it.

The UN is a useless organization Which has clearly grown much too large to be effective.

It's membership is mostly ideologue leftists along the lines of Chavez and guys from Nicaragua and Bolivia. It mostly serves as a forum for everything anti-US and illogical.....it serves Iran's objectives very well and gives it legitimacy.

It will truly be a great day when this useless organization is booted from NY and the US. Perhaps Havana, Kampala or Caracas would make a good home for it, or maybe even Santo Domingo.

I say: good riddance!

The irresponsible gov of Fernandez ask the UN to decide because he knows the real purpose of that plant is not to produce cement the real purpose is to steal the gold and amber mines of the area without declares the profit, the cement plant is a fashion for an illegal activity, the UN are going to approve the plant because that institution was created to protect the colonial properties of the countries that won the second war, like the barry gold mining co who is going to poison all the cibao valley and is bad people property. Democracy in this style is a patent to steal the country with a supposed people permission.
