SANTO DOMINGO.- An Environment Ministry study in Baoruco and Independencia provinces (southwest) identified 23 communities where 200 people make 37,000 sacks of charcoal per month, a clandestine market worth RD$89.2 million (US$2.5 million) yearly.

The Cross-border Environmental Program report presented last month found a charcoal-marketing network concentrated in 19 villages of the region. “All production is finally gathered in Tierra Nueva, Boca de Cachón and Puerto Escondido from where it takes the trails and routes towards Haiti, crossing mainly through lake Azuéi.”

It details a simple yet effective chain to make, traffic and illegally market charcoal in Haiti and notes that the 200 producers are mostly of Haitian origin, helped by 12 Dominican truck drivers, to produce every month around 37,000 sacks, sold to less than five Haitian retailers, who gather on the west side of the lake, for subsequent transport and sale in Port au Prince.

Environmental cost

“This production equals 445,788 sacks annually (27,300 tons) which is sold at RD$200 (US$5.55) per sack, generating an annual market of RD$89.2 million, US$2.5 million).” the study headed by the consultant Humberto Checo said.

“This opportunity to generate income, nestled in a captive market, has caused a severe deterioration to the base of the natural resources along the entire border region, where an important process of blight, severe biodiversity losses, poverty and corruption is also evident,” it adds.

"Dominican military personnel have demolished several illegal charcoal producing ovens in Jimani where Dominican and Haitian gangs have gone into the business of producing charcoal, which is sold for a profit over the border in Haiti."

Where are those prejudice morons now? I guess they'll says the Haitians are forcing them cut down the trees. I suppose a few Dominicans 'savages' will have to get incinerated................

Much of this is used to roast commercial chickens because the flavor al Carbon is much better and a cultural taste that cannot be matched with gas .....

Problem with Haiti? There is no such thing, Haitians and Dominicans have been sharing this piece of land for over 150 years now and yet they have never been at war. This is something to respect...Look at Africa and you will understand what I am talking about.

Piemman,

150 years? Try 46 and that's only because the Haitian government has had decreasing political strength ever since and its military has been relatively non-existant for the past two decades.

Last confrontation was in 1963, when Haiti stormed the Dominican embassy in Port-Au-Prince. We came as close as having guns aimed at Haitian cities with the finger on the trigger. Thank the OAS for saving your asses.

Problably it is less than 150...probably it is 46 as you said, but still it is a lot. No matter on which angle you look at it, these two people need each other. Haiti represents one hell of a market for DR, on the other hand DR should be a source of great motivation to help Haiti cope with its internal problems. DR should reinforce its capacity as not to let the Haitians destroy its environement and so on...Both Haiti and DR will have something to lose if those conflicts are not resolved.

By the way the OAS did not save my ass, they could not either. Such a dirty organization. Please!!!

I wonder if they pay josean in dinero effectivo o en sacos de carbon

About having a working government for once... Haitians can not get along with their fellow brother since 1804 to govern Haiti. Who do you think you are to ask for motivation ? respect yourself first, then respect will naturally be granted from others.

When the news that Haitians were found burning woods to make charcaol and were killed, josean was all over Dt spitting his usual anti Haitian and anti Leonel vandettas
.Now that we know the truth who are controlling the charcoal business, josean is nowhere to be found
Some people have said that he went to the border to collect his money or his share of bags of charcoal from the owners of the charcoal ovens.

josean, defend yourself !
