SANTO DOMINGO. –United States embassy Commercial attaché Christopher Lambert yesterday revealed his concern with the spike in drug trafficking here and in other countries, for which Washington will concentrate on increasing its collaboration in the war on drugs. “We recognize Dominican Republic’s cooperation and efforts in this area and we appreciate the good relation we have in that field.”
The diplomat said aid for the country’s war on drug trafficking may increase in the next few months after president Barack Obama announced the initiative “Security for the Caribbean basin” in the Summit of the Americas held in Trinidad & Tobago, where the Dominican Republic and other CARICOM member states also participated.
The interim head of the U.S. Embassy stressed that given this concrete fact both countries are waging a joint war with evident results.

Until the corruption problems are properly addressed the drug problem will never go away. You can have the best radar and planes but if the people in charge of them are on the wrong team it will never work. Our corrupt officials will make sure they still get their pockets lined with the drug money. Go after the source of the problem.

Their is a hierarchy in the system, cops turn away, lawyers are the middleman and the judges get the big pay off. If drugs were legalized, new chemicals would be genetically designed to mess with people. Sadly, this problem will never going away, unless society changes. Stop blaming the manufacturer and distribution. They're only suppling the demand. We must look within ourselves...

I just hope that we do not become the next Mexico. I love going to the barrios and campos that is where the real Dominican Republic lies. Not on the beaches and resorts. What we need is better a paid police and military and I am not talking about the generals and colonels. 3000 pesos a month is a joke they need to at least triple that. And next we get weapons, helicopters not jets ( jets are too costly to maintain) and more boats to protect the borders. But this is what we need, not what we are going to get/do.

The RD Gov has been blinded by greed and Lionels silence is the best indicator as to where he stands on corruption in police, military & politics. Unfortunately, despite the US tax dollars spent, we are loosing the war on drugs despite some small wins... While being ineffective both Gov's have allowed the drug cartels to be more powerful and influential and get another foothold closer to US shores. The border security in both the RD & Haiti are a joke. DNCD is corrupt as a sick dog's vomit and have even corrupted American Airline baggage handlers as the cancer spreads..
The good Dominican poor in the barrios have enough challenges in the area of economic survival without become drug addicts to boot!
It is like Kanye West said correctly during Katrina ... no one in Gov cares about black people (nor people of color). Same stuff different .. day!
