As the sowthwest burns...
Jimaní, Dominican Republic. - Again responding to press reports, the Dominican Government yesterday sent Army troops supported by two helicopters to dismantle furnaces used to make charcoal from forests in this western municipality and set up a vigilance to prevent the practice from continuing,.
Army commander Joaquin Feliz Perez ordered the furnaces were torched and the charcoal seized will be sent to the Environment Ministry, said Army Intelligence director Francisco Ovalle. Army Planning director Manuel Castillo and 5th Brigade commander headquartered in Jimaní, Jorge Medrano Vólquez also took part in the operation.
Environment Ministry provincial director Héctor Garibaldis Perez accompanied the senior officers in the effort, which led to the confiscation of 943 sacks of charcoal in the community Baitoa Seca and 200 in Las Lajas.
The Army also set up checkpoints to stop all trucks which carry charcoal, until they can show an authorization provided through a program known as Dry Forest.
Several newspapers, Listin Diario and El Dia among them, have recently reported on the depredation of the forests to make charcoal in the Southwest, where three Haitians who were caught in that practice, were gunned down reportedly by Dominicans.

My input stems from the onslaught of prejudice Dominicans thinking that it was reasonable to kill Haitians and incinerate them. (An article on DT several days ago).
The Dominican reasoning, if they could, was that the Haitian ‘savages’ were raping their land and death was too good.
Well it turns out that the Dominicans were in on the tree slashing and generating charcoal to be sold in Haiti.
So what should be done to those Dominican ‘savages’?
Your homophobic remarks only accentuate your poor to little education and character.

Blutarsky you are truly RETARDED. You irk me so much with your lack of knowledge of the Dominican Republic I have taken a personal vendetta against you. you said " Much of That charcoal is sold in the Dominican Republic". That is a fallacy, I come from los campos de samana, We never bought charcoal we made our own.We cut trees from our personal lands and made it to an as needed basis. In the capitol and big cities they rarely use it since cooking gas is subsidized, you see blutarsky I actually lived in these barrios and campos that you only hear stories about. You should not speak of subjects that you know nothing of.

If you worked on the website for purported ranch, then it probably never went into business to begin with,,,,it probably failed the minute you got involved! I couldn't imagine what the website looked like: we got our compost heaps; we got ripe tomatoes grown in human feces; we got urine coolers, so you could enjoy a nice cold drink; etc.

I believe it's ill-advised for DT "newbies" to take on some critical contributors with personal attacks, chief among them the indomitable "Blutarsky". It was the bantering and rapid-fire retort between him and "Josean" that prompted me to join the forum. That was really entertaining and, typically, their commentaries were infinitely more interesting than featured stories.
Bluto has toned down a bit, possibly due to frequent castigation by DT monitors; however, he has exhibited great chameleonic adaptation and managed to persist and survive storms.
DT annals are chock full of personalities who took these individuals on and just faded into oblivion, never to be heard from again.
RealDominican, my gratuitous advice to you is: be careful in your challenge to Bluto, lest you want to have similar fate to those who preceded you. I would further refrain from taking on: Josean, Dreadlocks, Lautaro, Generoso and Cibaeno.
You are welcome.

Both sides of the island need to use solar energy to cook their meals. Haiti, however, has demonstrated an even greater degree of ecological devastation than the DR, and the Haitian leadership needs to finally act to reconstruct their forest and green spaces. The international community and donor nations need to step-up and demand action. I say that donor nations should subsidize a few million solar cooking devices for both sides. This should alleviate some of the demand for charcoal use. If you only target Haiti, then you create an incentive to sell their devices to the DR, so make it possible for both sides, and give Haiti more of them since the problem is far worse on their side of the island. High rise housing units that remove urban sprawl and thus alleviate the pressure on the green spaces of Haiti needs serious consideration. Millions of trees need to be planted and PROTECTED in Haiti. Again, this should be viewed as a positive; jobs for growers and planters, policing the

While sun energy is essentially free, solar energy conversion to electricity is not, as the Dutch clearly found out the hard way and now they pay $0.38/kw-h, one of the highest rate on earth!

For all I know, all the barrios and most campos in Dominican Republic have been using gas since 1979 and 1980's
And we have not been cutting trees.
IF we allow the Haitians to continue to roam the country doing what they please we will end up like the EASTERN ISLAND with no trees or vegetation. Now Haitians would be happy.
But like always they always blame Dominicans for their calamity.
Now is our fault the Haitians are cutting our trees and destroying our environment. Incredible!!! Hasta cuando!!!
