SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic’s business sector “blackmailed” some lawmakers to vote for the controversial limit on the citizens’’ access to beaches, lakes and rivers, said Wednesday a ruling PLD party legislator, whose defiance she admits may keep her from seeking reelection as a Deputy.
Isabel Bonilla said 19 of her colleagues were called either by business leaders, while for others the call came from and or PLD party leaders and companions, to either vote for the ban or absent themselves from the floor. She didn’t provide names.
She cited the case of the northern coast town Rio San Juan, where a hotel project tried to shut off the access to their beach, but the townspeople protested to the point that “the inventors had to leave, and good riddance.”
The legislator said she tried to warn the deputies of the backlash from such a ban, which has sparked calls for protests by several community, environmental and even civic groups. “I told them that this isn’t even politics, I felt deeply relieved after I voted because I’m from Rio San Juan, how can I with a clear conscience vote to limit access to the beaches, how would I be able to face my constituents after doing that.”
Bonilla said “the excuse” used to convince the legislators to approve the ban was to guarantee investments, “but how can that be possible when you take away the rights of the citizens.”
Interviewed by Huchi Lora and Patricia Solano in El Dia, Telesistema, the lawmaker from Maria Trinidad Sanchez (north) province said she agrees with Central Electoral Board president Julio Cesar Castanos’ statement that Dominicans can’t be denied access to their beaches, “even if written in the constitution.”
Bonilla, Minou Tavarez Mirabal and Pelegrin Castillo were some of the Assembly members who voted against limiting the access to the beaches, whereas cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez also slammed the measure.

It's just like in the "states" the business sector has the biggest clout with the politicians and they will use any manner possible, including donations and coercion to effect legislation that will favor them. The behavior of the politicians is a mind-set that the general public be damned, as the public doe not have the will or the resources to gain a politician's ear. Just throw the people a few chickens and they will be happy.

There is a compromise here. The investors are NOT worried about citizens like this little girl (it's an extreme contradiction). Investors R worried about Dominicans in general who will "ruin the neighborhood" either criminals o corrupt police bringing negative spillover thus hurting investments & ROI. It's all bout the money!
However, most tourist would actually enjoy a peaceful vacation along side natives (who have some degree of normalcy). But investors want to protect their investment or not build!
We need to call a spade: A SPADE! And thereby deal with the real issues "RD Gov corrupiton & investor greed" which is why the RD is a safe haven for Columbian criminals (soon Mexicans).
Don't get "it twisted" as what the real core problem is... MONEY, investment and PROTECTING THAT INVESTMENT & its RETURN%. (becuz it's NOT the girl in the photo).
From Dominican Tigueres-to-corrupt police; the investors don't want to bring down property values (investment).

We should not get this all twisted but this has nothing to do with criminals it is about money. Some people want to own our beaches and make us pay for their use. Try walking into a resort area beach and even as a normal Dominican female it is made very difficult.
Any politician who voted yes to this has been bribed. Get the facts straight this isn't about blackmail because what can they possibly use to blackmail these politicians? How about the amount of bribes they receive thats about it.
Anyone who voted for this should be hung in the public square. The way we treat political criminals is our problem why we have so much corruption. Off with their heads and take their money.

Only one word can describe this situation and those supposedly involved: Disgusting.

a resort in rio san juan has guards 24/7 on the beach. You can be on the beach at any time of the night with out thinking that you are going to be mugged
From: United States, FREEPORT,( The other Dominican Republic) Long Island....(We should be proud of our country not embarassed by it.)
Parks and Wildlife Authority, Tax the hotels and charge a small cover charge and create JOBS. It works for JONES BEACH in Long Island NY. DR definitly needs new blood in congress

Bonilla take a brave step forward by coming out with this info. But Ms. Bonilla must now see this through. She must name the 19 legislators who were either coerced or bribed IMMEDIATELY. The public should DEMAND as much. Vamos a ver de quien se trata y despues hablamos.

Now that is NO shock at all.
Dominicans have an entitlement mentality. Somehow they think they have suffered so much that the try and screw everyone.
What a bunch of pathetic 10 year olds.
Can’t any of you Dominicans ask your ‘fearless leader’ where the hell his “Zero Tolerance” is?
BTW LF is neither fearless or a leader.

That's a very general statement and offensive one at that.

cibaeño75 you are correct we must know who the corrupt ones are. I would think they are all afraid to be named. We all know when our corrupt leaders do not give us justice in extreme cases the people take matters into their own hands. What other choice do we have.

Aw GMiller, why do you have to lump everyone together? That would be akin to saying all Americans are hypocritical racist capitlaistic pigs who only care about money and their race. That would be too general a statement. As far as the big duffus L, his zero tolerance is a nice soundbite, and that's all it is. He and his administration are a joke. But I fear what's coming next as it seems things keep getting worse here year by year, administration by administration. Hopefully one day, before its too late, el pueblo grows tried of this nonsense and takes the necessary steps to effectuate change in the country.

New word for bribe. Blackmail.
Way to go Juanb. The beaches in this country belong to the people of the Dominican Republic and should not be sold to private interest for any reason for any costs.
The hotel owners who want your property want it without the Dominican's. If we look at history we will see that in Cuba before Castro; Cuban were forbiden by law from some toursit related business.
I would not advocate a revolution but the people need take back their stuff.
