Carlos Morales takes over from Federico Antun.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- Behind closed doors and the disorder which characterizes opposition Social Christian Reformist Party’s (PRSC) rank-and-file, Carlos Morales yesterday formally took the reins of that organization, whose alliance with the ruling PLD party he cited as a fact.

"The only thing we have from now on is to work, work, work, listen, listen, listen," were the first words of the new president, after he took the oath from the outgoing president Federico Antún.

Morales called on the reformists to "place their feet on the ground" and "dig deeply to again place the party on the seat of honor it corresponds," weakened after years of desertions and defeats at the polls.

Arms raised, Morales also cited the electoral alliance with the ruling PLD party as a fact. "Everything points toward an alliance with the PLD."

maybe, BASTA. but , even if he is not, he is just another rank opportunist and deal cutter, in the age old Dominican tradition. we will never get any semblance of modern government here, at least not in the foreseeable future.

dondankar, apart from the colors, as jeffreyb stated, there is NO DIFFERENCE. for that reason, there are no televised debates, because they agree on all things.

I agree with all of you, and further would add that it will be beneficial if there were televised debates like mentioned above

As much as I can't stand the PRSC and Balagueristas I have the utmost respect for Morales. He's a good man.

I'm still PLD but I worry that it's becoming too right-wing. The great Juan Bosch must be rolling in his grave right now. Let's just wait and see what happens. I might switch back to the PRD if the PLD becomes like the Republicans.

Edward, why do you have to be anything? how can you ally yourself with a bunch of losers, because of tradition? look how many republicans bolted the party after George Bush took the country into the ditch. it is called flexibility of mind. how can you let your mind be owned by something as nebulous and intangible as a political party? what do they stand for? what is their platform? are they left leaning, or right leaning? what are they? how did they earn your unerring loyalty?

Dreads, I know. I'm flexible and I don't support a party for long if they start acting stupid. I've never liked the PRSC because Trujillo's and Balaguer's people executed my uncle Miguel Mercedes and a good family friend whom I never met named William Mieses in San Francisco. At this point in time I support the PLD even though they are not a center-left party anymore. Their platform is mostly center-right these days. It seems like the DR is moving towards an U.S.- like 2 party system. The PLD will become like the Republicans soon and the PRD like the Democrats. Even though the PRD is liberal, they are still socially liberal and that's what different with DR politics..All the major parties are heavily influenced by the Catholic Church. I was always a big PRD supporter but then Pena Gomez died and that dumb buffoon Hipolito Mejia came along. Ever since then I have supported Leonel because I believe he's the best leader the country has ever had.

Even though i''m upset at what happened in 1996 when almost all the Reformistas supported Leonel because they didn't want Pena Gomez as President, I still think the country is better off with LF. I just hope that the PRD can produce a great intellectual like Juan Bosch or LF with great ideas once again because the DR is not going anywhere with people like Hippo and Miguel Vargas.

how about getting to a point wherein you say that you are fed up with everybody, and are in search of new blood and ideas? surely you do not believe that any of these guys is worth a rat's ass, do you? a buddy of mine went searching for an apartment lately. he found one, and the owner told him that one of the bright spots is that he would not have to pay for electricity. the owner informed him that he himself does not pay. "how so?", my buddy asked. "we have our ways",replied the august landlord. translated into english, that means "we steal it". well, might i inform you that this landlord is running for mayor of a municipality which i will keep undisclosed. with people like these, is there any hope?

Miguel Mercedes a commie? was he planning the overthrow of the government? was he working with foreign elements (Cuba USSR ) conspiring against DR?

If so he was an enemy of the state trying to bring about the most genocidal system the world has known with over 140 million dead directly and hundreds of millions either dead or severely mistreated indirectly.

Center left is like a pig with lipstick ...it's still a pig and the goal is still the same!

Dread ,watch out for eduardo he wants to meet you and have a couple of drinks were he will really let go...maybe he likes dreads...

By the way the people of San Francisco have always been rabble rousers ,it's no coincidence that most of the drug trade in NYC was conducted by " Francomacorisanos" !!

It's typical of the left to foment trouble and then cry like little girls when confronted by reality ...

Pepe FYI they were not communists. They protested against the fascist authoritarianism that existed in the DR back then. To me they are heroes and gave their lives for a great cause!

Are you sure ? most opposition to Balaguer was instigated from leftists circles ,if it was against Trujillo you may be correct though because opposition to Trujillo came from the full spectrum ,from commies to the hard right to the point that those that killed him were from the right not the left.

In Balaguers case though it was the middle of the cold war and most anti-Balagueristas were fierce communists and leftist instigators who sent young ideologically brainwashed youth to confront an army of uneducated soldiers knowing full well that blood would run but they used this innocent blood to further their own political futures. Fortunately they and all their Cuban based invasions failed to submerge DR in the pestilence then known as communism and now being called socialism of the 21st century.

If someone wants a true leftist government let them move to Cuba or North Korea.
