Buenos Aires.- The Inter-American Press Society’s (SIP) 65th general assembly unanimously approved a resolution urging "the Dominican Republic Congress to maintain the current Free Access to Public Information Law in effect, and discard a proposed reform which in its view limit access to information of general of interest."

The resolution was adopted in the Assembly’s final session, held in the Argentine capital’s hotel Puerto Maderos Hilton.

“A bill was submitted in Dominican Republic to modify the Access to Public Information Law which would seek to regulate and restrict access to data of government agencies," the resolution states.

The Resolution’s final paragraph states that "it’s requested that the authorities of Argentina, Chile, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic maintain their commitment to freedom of the press, establishing norms and resolutions that force the State to place its information at the public’s disposal."

SIP Freedom of the Press and Information Commission regional vice president Manuel Quiroz took part in the Assembly, where he expressed his concern with the future of unfettered exercise by Dominican journalists.

Quiroz, Editor in chief of newspaper El Caribe, said although the freedom of the press and public rendering of accounts with a varied flow of information and opinions exist in the country, several worrisome situations have arisen, among them the failed attempt to introduce a "truthful information" clause in the constitutional reform, which he said sought to hinder, pressure or restrict the media.

With so much corruption under the government, they are tring to hide the roots of all evil. freedom of the press is one of the biggest acts of freedom a country could ever have. If you hinder this in anyway you will be taking 5 steps back in becoming a modern civilized country. Now i see which way this country is headed and it's not up Transparency must be present in this country or it will lead us to a dictatorship if the wrong person ever gets elected.

Tiburcio acts for transparency

Allan Tiburcio Andrikson is an exemplary Dominican citizen. Although not financially well off, he has taken it upon himself to demand transparency from political parties. He is using the muscle of Law 200-04 on Free Access to Public Information and has already requested information from 100 government institutions. But he is also persevering in his quest to find out what 23 political organizations have done with more than RD$1 billion in taxpayer money they have received from 2000 to 31 August 2009, as reported in Hoy. He began by requesting information from the Dominican Revolutionary Party on 10 September. The party has not provided the information, and he took the case a step forward to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) Chamber of Disputes. He awaits a response tomorrow.
As reported in Hoy, he wants to set a precedent. He believes that if transparency is achieved, the DR will be different.

He says all citizens have to take this same step, and put aside the laissez-faire approach. In his opinion, if corruption in government is not stopped, the country could implode.

Trujillo laid the seeds and Balaguer enjoyed the fruits. Freedom of the press has been an elusive feat for our country since the times of trujillo.
