Santo Domingo. - The Government yesterday presented its plan to rid the Dominican Republic of child labor in its worse forms, an initiative of the Office of the First Lady, the Labor Ministry, and the National Council for Childhood and Adolescence (CONANI), employers, workers and society.

The announcement in the National Palace was headed by the vice president Rafael Alburquerque, the First lady Margarita Cedeño, and Labor minister Max Puig, who affirmed that in the effort to eradicate child labor and its worse forms, the country has reached important milestones.

Puig said still pending are the changes toward a legal framework applicable to child labor, fused in a single legislation which adheres to the rights and international treaties, but acknowledged that a high percentage of the population tolerates the practice.

Cedeño affirmed that her Office conducts important programs aimed at the integral development of the Dominican childhood in all aspects, and noted that the consequences of child labor perpetuate poverty and insecurity in affected sectors.

She expressed her personal concern with the proliferation of children beggars in the streets, in her view often with their parents’ irresponsible consent.

Present in the activity were the members of the National Directive Committee for the Eradication of Child Labor, the International Labor Convention (IEO), and union leaders.

Why not start by picking up the three little children, probably between 4 and 6 years old that have been put out to beg on Las Carreras, in Santiago, by their "parents". Better yet, why not wait until these "business people" come to pick the their "employees" up, late in the afternoon, and throw their asses in jail.

Why don't they throw the parents' asses in jail? Kids not in school should be taken to some sore of shelter (how about the Olympic stadium), and their parents arrested.

It's fun to make babies. Now, pay the amusement tax.

Dear First Lady,

After you “husband” has created the conditions for poverty to accelerate at epidemic proportions with his FAIELED economic polices of neo-liberal and trickle down economics you blame the poor for being poor!

Your horrible monetary policy, you crazy fiscal policy and spending like drunken sailors on reelection gimmicks like the METRO; neglecting agriculture, under funding education, ignoring health care and you wonder why desperate parents resort to desperate measures.

Aren’t your “husband” and his henchmen beggars as well? Aren’t they always begging for more and more loans from the international community, like there recent hat in hand begging to the IMF?

What hypocrites; to blame powerless people for the problems YOU have created for them!

That's so true Josean.

The really bad news is that the government has a "PLAN". Can anyone tell me of any plan that has actually come to successful fruition?
