Ticket pads in had, Amet police keep the pressure on procrastinators.
Santo Domingo.- As of Thursday noon Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) agents have impounded 2,438 vehicles nationwide, for being on the roads without the license plate renewal label, in the second day of a relentless operation.
AMET said the retained vehicles were immediately towed to its impound yards located in the old El Coco greyhound track, in the Santo Domingo East sector San Luis and to its precincts in other cities, where their owners can retrieve them after renewing their tags.
It said 1,161 vehicles were retained in Greater Santo Domingo, 399 in the East, 204 in the South, and 505 in the North regions.

Actually Blue, this is an example of how things can get done when there's political will!
These rare examples of transparency and effectiveness, shows highlights the corruption and inefficiencies elsewhere.

I'm glad! This is the beginning of what a developing country can and should start doing to start restoring law and order in the chaos of what driving a vehicle can be in the Dominican Republic.
They should extend their efforts to unlicensed drivers and DUI offenders.

I'm amazed at how people feel outrage at certain things, but not others... yes the transportation issue is a MAJOR problem, but it and many other issues in the DR are the CONSEQUENCES of political clientelism and corruption. BE MAD, but don't be mad at the poor concho-driver, be mad at the corrupt officials/politicos that are maintaining an environment where things like the conchos can persist!

Fees shouldn't exist just for the sake of having them. There must be a clear and useful purpose for them, and they shouldn't necessarily be there to perpetuate unnecessary jobs, promote cronyism.
I really don't believe people would have too much problems with fees, if they were used to educate drivers, improve roads.

Had my sticker for a month now...but here is my issue.
Is AMET a tax collector or an enforcer of safe driving? Today as they pulled over car after car for no sticker, the helmetless bikers drove by, the chaotic intersection traffic continued to leave a peso's worth of distance between each other and trucks passed with garbage blowing off the top.
So...is AMET a tax collector?

Mike,
I suppose AMET needs a clearer charter and greater autonomy and constancy of purpose. We need same from the Judicial Chamber of government. We also need to stop presidential decrees, especially self-serving and ill-advised ones. We should let congress debate and pass laws, and the Judicial branch enforce them. We also must stop "Compadre Rule" and favoritism, so that charges are not dismissed because of connection to or intervention by some colonel with a 6th grade education.
A strong police, with integrity and respect for the law, and an impartial and just Judicial branch are essential to any functioning modern and prosperous society. This is a good foundation, and the "dominoes effect" would take off this goalpost and bring about other positive changes for the betterment of our lives.
We clearly must strive for this type of change.

Where does the $$ go after being extorted into paying? If it is utilized like it is in the usa, it is a complete fraud. You may as well light a match to before handing it over to the government cause that's what they essentially do with it. Mafiaso puro!

chicos,
you all raise good points, and it's something that should make us more and more outraged. particularly, if you start linking these increased fees & taxes, and new international loans w/ the money that parties give out to buy their way into power. A couple of weeks ago we saw how the PLD was literally giving out yellow envelopes w/ money inside. The PRD and PRSC do the same. They all get public money, they are all spending OUR money!!!
essentially you can see the increase in G revenue and debt, as a way to finance the party's cronism!!!
BE MAD AT THE POLITICOS, BE MAD & DEMAND CHANGE. START SUPPORTING DEMOCRATIC PARTIES, NOT THE OLD CLIENTELIST PARTIES WHOES SOLE GOAL IS TO MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO.

There are AMET controls nearly every day in la Romana and they target seat belt use, licence renewal, misuse of mobile phones and occasionally hemet wear ..I have never seen them check the road worthiness of any vehicle.
The use of mobile phones in cars causes many accidents and needs to be controlled much more tightly by confiscating the phone
