Santo Domingo.– Nearly 2.1 million persons have
been vaccinated against tetanus and whooping cough, a milestone number in
the history of the inoculation program, the Ministry of Public Health reported.
According to Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez, the program has been responsible for the 50% drop in deaths from tetanus in the Dominican Republic during 2009, a figure compared to 2008, when 54 persons died from that disease.
Rojas said vaccination efforts are targeted at rural areas and construction workers. "The goal is that there not be a single death from tetanus," he pointed out.
