Santo Domingo.- Raul Humberto Yzaguirre, 70, a veteran activist in the civil rights struggle of Hispanics in the United States, has been accepted by the Dominican Government as new American ambassador in the country.

The Dominican Foreign Relations Ministry informed the U.S. embassy that president Leonel Fernandez “has granted with pleasure the approval of State” the activist’s appointment as ambassador.

Yzaguirre, of San Juan, Texas, son of Mexican parents, had presided the National Council on Race from 1974 to 2004, and in that regard confronted strict migratory policies implemented by presidents Jimmy Carter, George Bush, and had criticized president Bill Clinton for the very few appointment of Hispanic in key positions.

He replaces Robert Fannin, who’s a brief and lackluster tenure concluded in January, and who in turn replaced the active and often controversial Hans Hertell.

Don't know his tenure at early La Raza years — much activisim was needed then in So.Cal.
But La Raza today is a racist organization.

Congrats to Raúl Humberto Yzaguirre, I wish you all the best! We desperately need good leadership to help improve relations between the two governments. Unfortunately, many gringos are already judging you before you start your work. There should be no criticism of your work on race relations (only white gringos who can not identify with generations of discriminations would target this issue).

Although no one is interested in a unified Hispanola and we should respect sovergnity ...there are many issues where the RD Gov needs "tough love" and pressure to move in the right direction such as there role in the illegal drug trade (which is now a local problem in poorer barrios), massive RD Gov corruption, education, healthcare, job creation and inflation (merchant price gouging due to lack of real competition. etc.

PLEASE DO NOT PLAY BE POLITICALLY CORRECT WITH THE RD GOV sins and loose the support of grass roots Dominicans and Americans living in the RD. God Bless!

Welcome to the DR, Mr Ambassador Yzaguirre. Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer, in particular while in the DR. Good luck.

If my memory serves me correctly "La Raza" in East Los Angeles, California during the 1960's had strong ties with the Radical Socialistic group movements such as "The Brown Berets" who were the community organizers of the Latino communities calling for Social change during that era. The "Brown Berets" who adopted the "CHE" and "The Black Panthers" look, ideology and call for social change [ring-a-bell]. the Brown Berets were strong supporters and were the behind the scenes of the East Los Angeles riots known as the start of "El Movimento" and "Chicano Power".
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles during the 1960's there was great division among the Latino community, at first the Chicano movement did not include Latinos from South, Central America and Caribbean born Latinos, later that was to change for there numbers sake. The radical Latino groups of the 60's rallied behind the Caesar Chavez labor movement in central California for support.

Part 2
Ceasar Chavez quietly rejected the Latino Socialistic radical movements for fear of being labeled Radical thus damaging His Farmers labor movement. Mr. Chavez instead chose the Martin Luther King non violent approach instead which drew under the table criticism from the radicals of the day.
Ceasar was the only true leader of all Latinos in California. One has to read about the real History of Mr. Chavez who was born in the fields later served in the U.S Navy during WW2. Mr. Chavez at first did not even get support of the Catholic Church, it was not even until Mr. Chavez started to hold meeting in the fields on Sundays that the Church realized WHERE'S THE FLOCK.
In closing one has to look at the life Mr. Chavez lead, not money, fame or power never CHANGED this MAN who was true to the cause. Many so called Latinos in America will PIMP his name but to those who lived in California will say GO TO HELL.
Mr. Chavez is buried in the fields were He labored.

I'm sure many will race to prove me wrong by going back into the historic internet posting and believe what they read. Reading about events means little then living the events.
in closing I'll leave all with this.....
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles during the 60's all Latinos were labeled by Whites and Blacks alike as Mexicans. Many of my Mexican-American Neighborhood friends would call me the Latino Nigger and was rejected by many, me and my Brothers got into a lot of fist fights because of this.
Chi- comes from the Apache word meaning half breed, nor here or there.
Cano- comes from the Mexican word [1850's] AmeriCANO MexCANO.
Thus the word CHICANO.

Sounds like he is a "RACIST". Ship all those US Government yankees off the island. Scum! The representation should be diminished to not more than that of a special interest section similar to Cuba. Require visas for Americans entering the Country similar to Brasil. Reciprocity for the imperialists.
After reading the below, I had to wonder if the USDOS was referring to itself as the totalitarian police state it has become. I guess this webpage was written prior to 10 years ago.

So this guy is famous for his fighting strict migratory policies designed to stem the tide of illegal Mexicans to the US? Evidently those policies were never strict enough, yet he wanted them looser somehow?

Sounds to me like this guy is more sympathetic to illegal immigrants rather than the well-being of the societies they force themselves on.

Don't worry Josean I am safe from any goons . Believe me they would need some green berets or Navy Seals to get into my house ,one call to my father and the cepillitos would be dust.

Besides the US military doesn't usually support radical left wing idiots anyhow and my father knows many people in the US chain of command.

Forget it was going to reply to VIVACUBA'S 2 posts but decided that
A. There was no value in the posts to begin with.
B. Have to take away from his time at headquarters there on Independica.
C. Then there is the problem of giving him any kind of legitimacy.
D. Must piss him off that the US Consulate has the new visa office so close to headquarters.
E. Then I could find no relevance between his posts, and his links??

Santana33, "Sounds to me like this guy is more sympathetic to illegal immigrants rather than the well-being of the societies they force themselves on."...

You got that right on the money. In fact, you're all correct and time will verify this with his future actions. Wait and see when his true colors show. This puppet was sent here for that purpose. The US establishment is always against the people of the societies they force themselves upon. It is the method of operation for the american government and the american people are so frickin' stupid they havent figured it out yet. Play one group against the other.
