SANTO DOMINGO. - The Immigration Agency yesterday announced the repatriation of the 112 undocumented Haitians arrested Sunday for burning trees within the Los Haitises National Park.

It said they would be immediately deported as those cases merit, after their illegal status in the country was verified.

The Haitians were detained by Environment Ministry park rangers in two groups caught setting fires in forests of the protected area to later illegally plant crops. Immigration added that it constantly detains and repatriates undocumented Haitians who roam the streets across the country daily.

Los Haitises, a source important rivers in Dominican Republic’s northeast under a recovery process begun several years ago, when squatter farmers and cattle ranchers were evicted by decree.

Why deport them now? Would not be better to incorporate them to the reforestation program and make each of them plant at least 1000 trees in the area they were found burning them. Few army man to watch them, and proceed if they try to escape, is all that is needed. After that, the should be deported

How can they deport a group of people that committed a crime without doing the time? They will be back in our country within a few weeks if not a few days, so what is the point they are trying to make here. Are they telling the Haitians that it is ok for them to destroy our country just as they have theirs, and get away with it?

Some hard labor, like in Cool Hand Luke, would be a great de-motivator. Have these criminals help build and repair roads, construct sanitary/drinking water facilities and all horribly strenuous jobs that need to be done...like in a chain gang.
After a 4 months of 16 hour days, then send them back to Haiti.

Anything other that the firing squad or life without parole guarantees they'll be back on the first tap-tap.

Micaela, xwill and WalterPolo: You are right. Authorities must take steps to forbid that Haitians in the DR and Dominicans destroy the forest like in Haiti.

Easy guys,

Is it possible that repatriation to Haiti could be a much worse punishment than any jail time in DR? Possibly, that could be nearly as bad as death!

Think about it! They are going back to a desolate landscape, with no job prospects and lack of everyhting, including food and water and even charcoal. Now, all we need to do is ensure they never set foot in DR again.

To our illustrious officials, however: please come up with quick plan for effectively dealing with immigrant delinquency, with special chapter for addressing deforestation. And, no, exiling them to POP, Bavaro or Punta Cana doesn't count! I do believe that some DT contributors above offer some good suggestions, however, please consider them catalysts.

glomarexplorer, I disagree. If they would stay in Haiti, maybe, but almost every one deported returned in less than a week and sometimes they admitted that had been deported as much as 12 times. Once they find the way here, they keep coming. For violating our immigration laws and the damage to our environment they should pay some reparation. Make them plant trees in the areas they have cut and burn them seems to me the best punishment; we can always deport them later. And given our diligent immigration authorities, our sooo interested in solve the problem president, Haitians would be coming and staying here for a long time, so at least for that, they should pay for.

I think everyone thats not supposed to be DR should be deported. I dont know what the Immigration authorities are doing but it sounds like they arent doing SHIT. And the goverment isnt doing anything either because they just keep coming back and we cant seem to solve the issue just like with the electricity.

They should have to pay for their crime by planting 1000 trees; have heavy metal ball-and-chains placed on their ankles. After filming both the devastations and the renewal, deport them. Again, make a great deal out of this situation to help perpetuate the notion that these kinds of acts will carry sever penalties.

Y'all are a bunch of ignorants. Remember, Haiti fed y'all and take care of y'all for how long? Shame on all of you. Guess what? none of you guys are actually in the Dominican Republic. Y'all probably somewhere else being humiliated just like them Haitians. If it was that good in the DR, y'all definitely would stay there. Everyone is looking for a better life. If some Haitians burned a Dominican forest, they deserve to be punished accordind to the law. shame on y'all for using these rhetorics. It will come a day when Haitians will have a better life, they will get it together and I hope for the same reciprocity. I believe in a Haitian future and I also believe it will be bright.

huddy22 when and for how long Haiti fed and took care of us, only you know. If you want to know how good or bad is in DR, ask the Haitians, that come, stay and refuse to leave. But maybe DR situation is not the problem, it is how terrible is in Haiti, forcing Haitians to escape toward our country. We sincerely hope that Haiti have a bright future and for Haitians to have a better life.

The problem is that it is taking way too long and that Haitians are waiting for it in DR, while we want them to wait for it in Haiti and in the meantime, work hard for it to make it happen sooner.

You can dream huddy but unless you got rid of all the Haitians and replaced them with new ones it's not going to happen.

BTW you guys can't feed yourselves and all you ever did to us was rape ,pillage, kill and destroy plus infecting DR with the most backwards of all cultures. When your animal armies came to DR they tried to make US pay for your debt and we threw your dirty stinking asses back to Haiti ,after that you tried over and over only to be whipped every time.

Now you are the charity case of the world and if not for the international community more than half your population would have starved and the other part is on are side like termites living off of us and destroying our forests and literally crapping all over like beasts.

So please go fix your latrine and let us deal with our problems because you pitis talk a good game but you all you do is talk and pound on your chests while your people eat dirt cakes.

Why are you guys so worried about Haiti? Noticed, not too many haitian respond to these posts. Worry about the DR and Haiti will be fine. You guys have enough problems to worry about too. If you guys do not have anything better to do, just keep doing what you do best (drugs and Prostitution). ZOE for Life, a proud haitian, now what?

huddy22, we are not so much worried about Haiti, but about more than two million of Haitians in DR. The best thing we have to do is deport them back to their paradise. Do you realize that if Dominicans go to Haiti for drugs and prostitution it only means that drug and prostitution is all you have to offer? besides, how come if drugs are your thing, you are having a bad time?

By the way is rough to call 209 years 'a bad time'. And yes, you are right, you were at the top, for 22 years, but in your mind, you think it was for 222. Wake up, boy! Those 22 years are long gone, not telling anything about the way that we sent you scurrying back to your side and how you are here again, but this time begging for mercy.
