Santo Domingo.– President Leonel Fernandez left for Portugal to attend the Nineteenth Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and of Government that will begin next Monday in Estoril, providing a platform for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking nations to discuss innovation, the global financial crisis and climate change.

Previous to his participation in the summit, Fernandez will make a 24 hours stopover in Madrid, Spain, where he will hold important private meetings. The Dominican president will also attend a breakfast hosted by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos, and the president of the Spanish government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Spain has said it is "willing" to help reducing tensions between Venezuela and Colombia, which are at odds about the use of Colombian military bases by US troops, confirmed on Friday sources of the Spanish government, some days before Hugo Chavez and Alvaro Uribe attend a meeting in Portugal.

Here's a partial list of some of the freeloaders along for this 11 (yes, ELEVEN) day vacation at our expense. Wanna bet he comes back with some vague promises about upcoming investments that never happen, as always?
Temistocles Montas, Administrative Minister Luis Manuel Bonetti, Higher Education Minister Ligia Amada Melo, Presidential legal advisor Abel Rodriguez del Orbe, press secretary Rafael Nunez, and Center of Exports and Investment director Eddy Martinez. Also Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia, Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua, Labor Minister Max Puig, and architect Joaquin Geronimo, director of the National Housing Institute (BNV).
Also traveling with the President to France are businessmen Jose Miguel Bonetti, Felix Garcia, Manuel Alejandro Grullon and his wife Rosa de Grullon, Jose Clase, Manuel Corripio and Micalo Bermudez.

LIE-onel Fernandez make sure you shut off your cell phone like Mark Sanford!

Consumer protest at high cell rates

Using e-mail and social media campaigns, consumer groups are seeking to mobilize nationwide support for a protest aimed at cell phone providers Claro (Codetel), Orange, Tricom and Viva for the high rates they charge consumers in the DR.
The case presented is that in the US you can get 2,000 free minutes for only US$52.20. This is beyond what the normal user can talk in a month. The note says that in the DR, the usage of those minutes would cost RD$7,000 (around US$194). The message is that the US has low cell phone costs because consumers protested by not using the service. The e-mail message suggests that on the 28, 29 and 30 of November 2009, people should turn off their cell phones for 72 hours.

"This is the only way we can show Claro, Tricom, Viva and Orange that we are not ignorant and that we won't let them continue putting their hands in our pockets," says the message. It continues by stating: "By acting together we can oblige them to lower the rates and improve the service that is very bad."
The message concludes: "If we do not defend ourselves, no one else is going to do it!"
The promoters of the campaign are urging everyone to get friends and relatives to join the blackout in protest at high cell phone high rates and poor service.

Juanb ..I totally agree with you on this one ..it is quite scandalous that such a large entourage should be going with the President. I have never heard of this before, except in Thailand and Singapore where the ministers travelled en masse and I have been wondering how this can be justified. I assume they are going on a governemnet plane .

josean.. I would be delighted if most people could switch off their phones especially when driving ,eating at a restaurant, looking at a movie, walking in a busy street and playing golf ..These phones are about the end of civil civilization!!!

The phone companies charge their outrageous fees and then we pay 25% on top of that as a tax to fund these vacations.

The commonwealth meeting is being held in Trinidad at present and the Queen is there with leaders from India Pakistan,Britain,Australia,New Zealand ,Canada and many other countries and these countries do not send large delegations ..normally the leader and various government advisers .. maybe the DR can ask to join this group and it would save much money ,we could learn to play cricket and also learn something more about honesty and transparency ..
