SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican-Haitian Women’s Movement president Sonia Pierre today called a halt to the violence and mistreatment she affirms Haitians in the country are the victims of.
To mark the 165th anniversary of the Dominican Constitution on Friday, November 6, the activist said every citizen’s human rights must be respected, but called the new Charter a step backward.
Pierre affirms that as of December 10 when it’s proclaimed, hundreds of Dominicans of Haitian descent will be left without a legal status, as the new Constitution requires both birthplace and bloodline to grant nationality.
The controversial activist said the disposition approved in the Constitution will affect hundreds of professionals who’ve studied and have developed in the Dominican Republic, although the new Constitution is expected to be retroactive so the thousands of illegal Haitians can obtain documents. “It’s regrettable that in this century when the world is seen as a global village, laws are being passed to jeopardize citizens."
Campaign
Pierre announced a campaign of awareness to effectively adopt a fair system and a regime on Dominican nationality which solves the problem of documentation. "The right to a Dominican name and nationality for Dominicans of Haitian ancestry will be analyzed as to the impact the new regime approved in the current constitutional process can have.”
The campaign’s motto, “I want a nation without exclusion" aims to show that all are equal before the law and, aspiring to a city free of discrimination.

Vacanos actually iam a Dominican citizen and i can vote as well, since my mother is from La vega. You did not know, that even if you where born in the USA, you can become a citizen through bloodline.
I always like to pull out my Cedula, when in the Airport they try to charge me the Tourist fee, since i have a US passport.

yes, I was going to apply for dual citizenship since my both parents are from DR and I was born here, but I am getting married next year and my lawyer told me to wait until after my fiance is in USA with me. He said that you never know and that could complicate the cita.
Yea my cusins do it all the time, they go into DR with Dominican documents and come back into USA with american documents. But sooner or later some one in DR will catch on and make everyone pay... they want the $10USD per person lol

baldoria while I agree with you in all the issues you posted if we don't do something about the Haitian "situation" all the other things won't matter because it is hard to fix anything when our already ignorant population becomes more ignorant everyday and our scarce resources in education and medical care are consumed by illegal invaders. We could fix the country but if we let Haitians in the millions enter they would just destroy it just like they destroy everything they touch.
Every Haitian (except the few elites) that crosses that border brings Dominican society back to the paleolithic era and we have enough backwardness (mostly imported in previous Haitian entries) to allow more Voodoo and ignorance in .
So if we need to fix our issues the first thing we need to do is close the border ,deport the majority of the Haitians and militarize the border .Then we can focus on our internal "Dominican" issues knowing well that if we teach 10,000 to read we won't have 50,000 illiterate

These politicos ask, "what can I do to enrich myself?" this is their #1 priority. This leads to weak state, extreme corruption, and underdevelopment. BE OUTRAGED AT THE PLD, PRD, PRSC... Until we deal with Political Clientelism, our country will go from worse to worse.
well, I hope that we can at least prioritize that we need to deal w/ corruption, then we can deal w/ some of the other issues. Look at it this way, if we deal w/ corruption, we can potentially more effectively curb the flow of undocumented migrants.
Every Haitian (except the few elites) that crosses that border brings Dominican society back to the paleolithic era and we have enough backwardness (mostly imported in previous Haitian entries) to allow more Voodoo and ignorance in .
So if we need to fix our issues the first thing we need to do is close the border ,deport the majority of the Haitians and militarize the border .Then we can focus on our internal "Dominican" issues knowing well that if we teach 10,000 to read we won't have 50,000 illiterate
