Santo Domingo.– Venezuela plans to build 2,000 homes for poor families
in the Dominican province of Montecristi, on the border with Haiti,
Governor Alejandro Toribio said yesterday.
According to Toribio, the
houses will be “equitably” distributed among low-income people in the
towns of San Fernando, Villa Vasquez, Castañuelas, Guayubin and Las
Matas de Santa Cruz.
The governor said Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez has already sent a commission to begin construction of the 2,000
houses, which will be prefabricated. The work will start next week and the initiative will allow
poor families to have a sturdy roof over their heads and “live in more
dignified conditions,” he added.
Toribio said the homes are a
sign of the Venezuelan government’s solidarity with the Dominican
people and hailed the strong relations between the two countries.
Under the leftist Chavez, oil-rich
Venezuela has provided crude at preferential prices to Caribbean
countries and even free home heating oil to poor Americans.

Considering the income that Venezuela receives from its oil, it is amazing the level of poverty that exists there. The crime is out of control. Better Chavez should take care of his own problems before meddling in the affairs of others. There are some interesting words in this press release. The first is prefabricated and so I assume that these homes will be built in Venezuela and will come to Montecristi by ship and lorry..so all that will be interesting as workers here try to assemble the houses.
The second is equitably..aword that is unknown in the DR and the final word is dignity and I do not think Dominicans dwell too much on that state .
The final sentance must be some form of justification for the policies of Chavez which have denied his people of many freedoms and enriched his own wealth.

PatD,
Thank you for your comments.
The brilliance of Reagan and Reaganomics is that he didn't have to be right, and maybe he wasn't. It was the fear that the American economic and war machineries instilled on our enemies that matter, and how the modernization or expansion of our instruments of war forced our enemies to join in a race they couldn't win and bankrupted them in process, while assuring real or even false prosperity for us. That was great, and we didn't even have to go to war to prevail.
We could talk about "voodoo economics" and similar until the cows come home, and you might be right in your assumption that it was just so; however, we are just looking for cause and effect here and, in the end, we experienced great prosperity and pride and respect during the Reagan years. So, yes, I admire him and respect him and am glad he was my president and leader. Too bad men like this only come once a generation.

I think there have been some much better leaders than glomarexplorer has nominated. Churchill put the C into courage and Thatcher may have pulled England out of its economic malaise but there have been wonderful leader in Asia who have led their countries to prosperity and peace...there have been leaders in Australia who have established a great multi ethnic population, there have been great leaders in Africa who have lead their countries out of colonial control and most people probably would have Roosevelt JFK and Ike well ahead of Reagan.
