SANTO DOMINGO.- The Super Tucano fighter planes already began training flights prior to operational missions, said Armed Forces minister Pedro Rafael Peña yesterday.

The military official also announced the country already has the trained technicians and pilots necessary to fly the aircraft, and though cautioned that more is still needed, didn’t specify what is still required. “We are finishing the recompilation everything regarding flight records and maintenance to immediately put them (the airplanes) into operation."

In those tasks, he said local technicians and pilots, including two from Brazil, help in the training.

Peña said he’s confident that as the result of the new control system to be installed by the Armed Forces, drug airdrops will fall considerably. He said aside from the eight Super Tucanos, the radar command and control centers, as well as the Navy’s detection equipment will also bolster the war on drug trafficking.

The purchase of the radars, whose cost the official placed at US$34 million, is already in the final contract phase and the company which wins the call for tenders will begin to provide provisional service at once.

The Armed Forces chief said the drugs found in the last few days weren’t airdropped and in his view is the result of the work they carry out.

Juango,

So, if two airplanes are going to reduce drug traffic by 80%, then why would we need 8? Perhaps we could pare things down and acquire just four, since rest would just be excess. Or, are we just planning ahead for growth?

It should be published as to what the "rules of engagement" are going to be assigned to the aircraft, the policy of when a suspect aircraft is encountered. One would expect the Tucano pilot to challenge the aircraft, but at what point will armed intervention be necessary? A published policy would put the criminal element on notice that the government is a not paper tiger, not in a playful mood; will prepare legitimate private and commercial aviation to expect a challenge if their flight behavior is out of the ordinary. Those challenged must properly respond or be forcibly removed from Dominican airpspace.

My God! What a celebration for a few enhanced propeller driven dinosaurs! What would I have heard if they were fifth generation fighters like the F22 Raptor or the latest Russian Sukhoi. It proves once more how retarded and childish some of my eatern neighbors can be. Who are you going to fight with these toys? The drug traffickers? Well, what about if they used better and faster planes with better mercenary pilots than yours?

Besides, it is easy for them to acquire a few ground to air missiles in order to clear your ridicule toys out of the sky, in fact, that's what I would have done.

I am sorry, because it was not in my intention to splash a cold shower on your childish enthusiasm, and circle dancing. You can keep celebrating, for I've better thing to do.

Oupala,

The planes are plenty adequate for Domincan immediate needs. For the price of just one F22 you could probably purchase 15 full squadrons of Tucanos.

You don't bring a Sherman tank to a fight where a revolver would do. DR is a 3rd world country and, as such, lacks technology and wherewithall to afford, maintain and pilot such a high-technology aircrat. Besides, Americans don't like machine guns and cannons on their aircarfts, so you would have to waste a missile to shoot down a Cessna and that just doesn't make sense to me. The missile should far outweigh cost of shot down aircraft.

The Tucanos are fine!

Zooma,

I respectfully disagree with you on publishing rules of engagement. That is a policy more apt for liberal politicians who have no interest on winning the war, or anything for that matter. Your field commanders are in best position to decide what's needed-in the immediacy of the moment, not ignoramus politicians and armchair civilian commanders.

Our policy is to enforce the law, being ever so vigilant of fact that we are fighting ruthless criminals, who could shoot at us at any time. We shouldn't have to wait for one of them to shoot at us before taking actions. Once intercpted, they've got to know they will have to land their aircraft as directed; if not, they should be shot down.

We must send a strong message to these criminals that we are serious and the game is over. They enter our airspace, they obey our laws. Period.

I have not forgotten the trashing and humiliation you received in the past by experienced real war pilots, for your pretensions and audacity to impersonate a real pilot instead of a dysfunctional video game player.
Your are a disgrace to the human race and a disgusting individual, and like a chihuahua with rabies just bark all the time, and spill your drool and anger in a daily basis, on DT.
We who post in DT are immune to your squeals, and regard you like a cucaracha or worse still a
garrrapata that leaches and sucks the blood of diseased and sick animals.
Now go ahead and continue with your current career as a dog walker. LOL.

The tucanos won't solve your problem glomarexplorer. In fact, with the level of corruption inside your government tank, you will hardly be able to catch those traffickers. The best way to get rid of them is to do just like us Haitians : let your peasants take care of those assholes.
As a matter of fact, the reason why your country seems to be overwhelmed now by the traffic of cocaine, is because the traffickers are scared like hell to lose their head. For, when their planes land, our peasants just corner them and hack the shit out of them.

It is much more efficient than to waste money and law enforcement resources that could serve for other government programs. Besides, do you think that the Americans are really sincere about eliminating a more than a trillion dollars a year world wide business that profit mainly to high level corrupt CIA officials? If you do, you need to be more informed about the so call war on drug.

Well, my friend the pilot Generoso,

I am not a real world pilot because I've admitted it since my last exchange with your friend Texasbill, if I recall well his pseudo. It was you who wanted to put me down even though your friend (TexasBill) has acknowledged that my knowledge was enough to have me certified.

I am informed enough in aviation civil and military in order to know what a real pilot experiences inside a cockpit. I have flown (with my computer) some of the Americans and Russians best fighters, and I have experienced all the thrill of aerial combat. I have learned a few manoeuvers in game manuals, and I did apply them successfully against high level computer skill. I've learned to navigate the sky the same way a real pilot does, in fact, and without bragging, I won't feel lost if, during a flight the pilot or the copilot would have died, and I was the only one onboard with flying skill.

The way you sound makes you appear like a real ace with at least one hundred victory marks painted on his killing machine. I didn't know that the Dominican airforce used to be engaged in aerial assault or combat. You might be one of those "lucky to get through" foreign pilots in the Yankee airforce, but which war did you take part in? Korea? Vietnam? Irak? or maybe the Second World War?
You can fool your fellow Dominicans, but not me my friend, because a real world pilot, who really knows attack planes specification, won't be circle dancing the way you're doing for a couple of outdated and revamped models. And as I said, the only thing the drug dealers have to do is to get themselves some heat seekers and blow those toys out of the sky. Like in Vietnam, they have the upper hand in your country, because you still have enough forest for them to hide and aim at your Tucanos.

Thanks for your respectful disagreement. However, the rules of engagement, whether from a competent military official or "liberal politicians", has to be published as a matter of a proof of government transparency. The people ought to know up front what the policy is going to be. A known rule of engagement will impede a whitewash of any incident that may transpire. A unpublished policy allows the military and politicians to be creative, to construct a policy that fits an incident after the fact.

Hello Zooma,

I just don't think you want to telegraph your moves or define the boundaries of your commitment, especially when dealing with ruthless criminals who rape our women, pervert our children and forsake our future. The rules of civility don't apply to these people, they must be dealt with quickly and effectively and with unquestionable punishment. They are more invasive than the "AIDS" virus and multiply faster. They are scum, and an expedient hanging from nearest lamp post is just too kind for them.

Personally, I wish for the quickest execution of all drug dealers, for they are the devil incarnate. I feel pretty much the same way about most Dominican politicians-they are scum!

Let the hangings commence immediately-I call for Dominican Bastille day!!!!! As for the power elite, I hope they remember the Russian revolution. BTW, if we need a dry run, then I would volunteer "Mucho Loco". I am sure he would rise to the occasion, sacrifice for country.
