Santiago.– Dominican police killed an undocumented Haitian immigrant who allegedly threatened them with a gun. The shooting occurred as officers pursued two men who had wounded a merchant during a robbery in the northern city of Santiago, police Col. Jesus Cordero Paredes said.

In the midst of the pursuit, the Haitian threatened the cops with a 38-caliber revolver, forcing the officers to fire their guns in self-defense, Cordero said. The police report did not say whether the Haitian man was accompanying the fleeing robbers, who managed to get away.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, say Dominican cops have carried out hundreds of extrajudicial executions of suspected criminals during incidents the police describe as “exchanges of gunfire.”

Dominican officials estimate that around 1 million Haitians live in the country, most of them illegal immigrants who work in agriculture and construction.

I have a very strong feeling that what Amnesty International says is in fact correct and that sometimes the victims are not even armed..it seems that some of the police think that they are judge and jury. I do not think that all the police executions are racial but that it is simply a police culture that needs to be changed very quickly .

In NYC you can be legal and a student and be shot 32 times. All hail the Police!

Don't know all the facts in this case. I can only hope the DR Police conduct a complete investigation with the interview of possible witnesses AND the injured victim to substantiate the use of deadly force.

Does anybody know how many total shots were fired, how many hits on the suspect and at what range ?

I hope they didn't shot the suspect with the weapon pictured [over kill] along with this article, that FN-FAL 308 cal. could of easily gone threw the suspect and injured innocent bystanders up to 600 meters away.

Basta,
Police are trained to shot to kill not injure, not like in the old time western movies where the weapon was shot off the hand of the bad guy or the bad guy was shot in the arm or shoulder, remember the good guy always won in the end....this real life.

Unlike NYC........WAIT UNTIL ALL THE FACTS ARE PRESENTED IN THIS CASE BEFORE drawing any conclusion for the truth may shock.

yes the police shot 32 times [a student] and were found to be in fact clear of any wrong doing and the list goes on. I would rather deal with a dominican cop than any police officer in the states!~

Could it be when dealing with Dominican Police the reality of getting shot are higher then in the States ?

At least in the States the Police are held to a higher standard like the selection process, written, oral, Mental, back ground check and Police Academy training.

In the States one has Maranda rights, a right to a speedy trial, with the notion of innocent till proven guilty.

No dough it's safe to say there's corruption at every level in modern society.

If I get stopped by the police I have nothing to fear or hide nor will I chose to run from the Police.

If I do get mistreatment in any way, shape or form or fell my Constitutional rights have been violated I'll get date, time, name, badge number, a brief written incident of events then file a formal written complaint and demand a written response within 10 working days.

I remember Rodney King, over kill.

All should not expect, but demand after all they work to protect us not the other way around.

Somebody says above, "if someone is illegal, that someone can be shot and a a 38 laid next to them." So, the USA and other nations should round up as many Dominicans in their countries as possible and shoot them, too huh? And since when being undocumented a warrant punishable by death? That is the most inhumane thing to say... regardless if your position on undocumented or illegals were that of an extreme radical fundamentalist. Golly, can some of you even hear yourselves?

Ok people let's not get so emotional here. This same thing happened to a couple of Dominicans the other days and i didn't hear the Human Rights defenders comment. Once again the message is clear DON'T PULL OR SHOOT A GUN to a police man because in any country on this planet you have a very high percentage of ending up dead as it is in this case just like the other cases last week and last month. Once again the story is clear and anybody who does a simple thinking will come to the conclusion that first the cop didn't know he was Haitian or that he was undocumented all they saw according to their story was a man pulling a gun at them and they have the right to shoot to protect them selves at ALL cost just like every other cop on the planet. Personally i would like the situation to have ended with the robbers and the gun man caught and brought to justice but if I have to choose between a Dead Gun Man or a dead Cop then my choice is clear this is a better ending for the story.

I'll repeat and go into more detail...Regarding Rodney King, problem is they only showed the beating of a defenseless victim about a million times on national T.V....one should see the entire clip and what lead up to the over beating,10 clunks too many, 2 good clunks should of been enough in my opinion. Since his spanking he's been in and out of jail on numerous criminal charges, the money he got from his settlement with the City of Los Angeles is all gone years ago and my understanding is flat broke and on public assistance. I wonder if R.K still in jail ?
And to think.....The L.A riots what a waste....not only burn but destroy and loot your own Neighborhood but use "Remember Rodney King" as a battle cry.

FUNNY, after all that good ol fun of looting, burning and stealing the Neighborhood folks found out too late "WHERE ARE WE GONNA SHOP FOR FOOD, HOW COME THERE'S NO MORE JOBS".....

L.A riots where STUPID ran WILD.

One million Haitians live in DR........ just imagine if there is some riots between these people, it will be very scary.

The tension between these two countries is getting worse and worse..... DR needs to do something before the riots explode........

If some Haitians robbed some Dominicans and then run away back to Haiti...... how the police going to catch them in Haiti?

You are missing the point hellborn, it's a challenge for me to formulate a question for you since your reasoning is rather awkward and your reading comprehension limited. Again go back and re-read my posting you will see the word "regardless of ethnicity". I am declining any further exchanges in that respect cuz it will be in my opinion an exercise in futility.

Anyways, if you are stupid enought to point a gun to a couple of policemen, then you should be clear on the fact that you are going to be killed.

Misshaiti has a little bird singing between her ears...

First she attacks Josean (Haitian legal defense lawyer par excellence ) then she proceeds to state that there are other ways to stop a person pointing a gun at police!!

I for one agree with most sound minded posters that regardless of race or ethnicity someone who pulls a gun and points it at police (anywhere) is looking to die or has something to hide.

If this idiot would have been killed by Haitian police little miss tweety bird would not have cared ,but when it's Dominican police she wants them to not only determine if he meant to shoot but also to check if he actually had bullets in the gun!!!

Excuse me sir with a gun would you please submit to a psychological evaluation to determine if you really will shoot at us and while you are at it could we check your gun for bullets?

This insanity in which any scratch on a Haitian gets heavy scrutiny while in Haiti Haitians are abused to the max without even a peep fro
