Santo Domingo.– National Police chief Major General Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin reinforced the operation "Safe Christmas 2009" with 16,000 more agents, aimed at preventing thefts, firing guns in the air, the illegal sale of fireworks, among other evils which increase at this time of the year.

According to Guzman Fermin, the operation’s objective is to prevent and investigate any criminal activity in the country, "carrying out preventive measures 24 hours a day, no matter what they have to do to protect the lives of citizens."

The number of patrols, which include 28,000 agents on the streets, was increased along El Conde, Duarte Avenue, the major commercials areas and the areas close to banks.

Will they be patrolling poor neighborhoods also, or will they be patrolling only the areas were there is a high tourist presence?, also, are these agents just out to ask the poor citizens for a handout?

many roads are so dark you don't know who will pop out... you have to be your own police

They are out collecting propinas on the highways....if you do have the heart to help a cop, buy them a shoeshine and lunch....it will help you later when his partners are robbing you.

Doggpound,,that is complete nonsense and one of the good things in the last two or three years is that the 100 pesos handout to road police is almost totally a thing of the past ...and if you think that the police are robbing you here ,then best to stay in the USA.

I guess cops shooting people and dropping throw-downs (guns) is your idea of accredted law enforcement......most are under educated, under equipped, "kids" who are willing to work for peanuts with the potential to make a score sometime in their career

FYI, I was stopped last year on my way to the aquarium in SD....just blocks from the aquarium...by a high ranking NP officer...his 9mm was hanging from his shirt....

He was not looking for "bad guys" by stopping Apolo taxis
