Santo Domingo.- Although the group Citizen Participation’s (PC) today hailed president Leonel Fernandez’s announcement  to seek help from international organisms to study government corruption and recommend measures to fight it, its General Coordinator has no hopes it would materialize as reports by organizations consulted will always be ignored.

“The action will not have any effect because there’s no political will to stop it,” said PC General Coordinator Samir Chami Isa.

Interviewed this morning in the program Diario de la Mañana, Chami Isa said if Dominican Republic’s senior officials had any political will, “we would see a government executive taken to court every day.”

The Coordinator of the civic group said despite what he called the country’s “good laws” to deal with corruption, none or very few are enforced, and cited the Free Access to Governmental Information among the “good legislations.

Chami Isa also listed the Dominican people’s for great challenges next year, in the areas of the economy, the reduction of foreign loans, education, health “and above all in the fight against corruption.”

The PC executive said to manage a transparent and ethical campaign for the May 16 elections is another important challenge. “We Dominicans have that commitment and we must make a great effort so everything transpires and culminates according to the law on electoral activities, because otherwise we’re going to regret it.”

As to the new Charter to take effect at the end of January, Chami Isa said the elimination of what he described as some faults wasn’t discussed. “It’s true that it’s a modern Constitution, but the mechanisms leading to political cronyism, (abuse of) presidential powers and government corruption remain.”

Well, at least he is honest in say the reality of the situation. Remember, Prez LF castrated the RD Gov watchdog on anti-corruption and thereafter has been silent on "series" of in-house corruption cases. His initial actions as president and his subsequent silence tells you where the Prez LF stands on this position.

But for many of us like me this is no new revelation...

Yeah, I told yo so... many years ago.

I had such high hopes for LF. He seemed like he had the intellectual power to change things in the DR.

After watching Hippo or years LF was a hopeful change.

After watching years of transparent corruption, nepotism and greed I had it.

LF is an empty suit with no integrity and has NO balls.

I wouldn’t let this moron run a bodega. It would be bankrupt in a week.

DR is currently bankrupt but ALL the politicians are too stupid to know it.

LF will never do anything to stop corruption he has too many skletons in his closet and is afraid if he does do anything someone will bring them to light . for example the spider-man incedent we all know that man was really his lover and that his so call wife is really a fixed marrige.

A study? Why don't they just start with beheading the corrupt. I say to do it inside the monument at La Parque de Independencia...just lean them over the railing in the center and lop off the head.

The pit will either fill up fast or the BS will stop after the first 2 or 3 are put on display.

Maybe, just maybe, if they keep hammering the fact, someone will stand up and take notice instead of it being ignored and swept under the rug day by day.

I can't say I'm optimistic though.

What a strange heading so soon after the President had a meeting with overseas people in an effort to reduce corruption.
It seems that there are laws in place but these are being ignored so why not find out the reason why they are not being followed..then we can get to the nub of the problem instead of all the accusations that are without any support but just a general suspicion.

Corruption is the center of our biggest problems. We do nothing about it and the ones who are caught simply are moved someplace else or lose their jobs. There needs to be a real legal system in this country where the rich and the poor are treated equally and those caught abusing their public service jobs and political status are penalized so heavily that it makes others not want to suffer the same fate.

Start by punishing the corrupt ones the same as drug dealers taking their assets and money.

The drugs and the corruption go hand in hand are deep rooted within our government officials, military, and police. We need to fix this problem quickly and it will in turn help correct many of our other problems.

First we need leadership that takes action and just doesn't talk about it.

"the nub of the problem" = LIE-ONEL FERNANDEZ! If Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Jose Feliciano can see that why can't you Ricky!

You must be in the Guinness Book of World Records for either the world’s most naive person or the biggest apologist in history!

No you are just full of hot air and please show me some evidence that the President has instructed the anti corruption laws not to be used....there is none..
The reason more than likely is that it is so hard to get evidence to present to a court to get convictions because people cover up for each other.

Now there's a perfect example. The guy takes his paycheck, tells everyone nothing will happen, and continues to take his paycheck, but no one including him thinks HE's corrupt!

Ricardolito, You want evidence.

Just follow the money. There is a law that all politicians MUST declare their assets and their spouses.

Few politician could. They should be impeached and jailed.

gmiller ..I imagine to declare one's spouse may be difficult here in the DR and Pelaut is more on track when he says that it is fear of reporting any suspected corruption that is the problem..everyone prefers to kepp out of it ..including people on this board who moan and grown and do nothing about it
