Santo Domingo.– Two French women convicted of drug trafficking were released from a Dominican prison and headed back to Paris on Tuesday, after President Leonel Fernandez pardoned them last week.

Sarah Zaknoun, 19, and Celine Faye, 20, left a women's penitentiary near Santiago accompanied by French officials. They were helicoptered to Santo Domingo, and taken to the French Embassy to await a commercial flight home.

The women were arrested in June 2008 while trying to board a flight to Paris carrying six kilograms of cocaine, but they maintain they did not know the drugs were in their luggage. A Dominican court sentenced them to eight years in prison.

Their case became a cause celebre in France, and interventions by officials and luminaries including first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy helped them secure a Christmas Eve pardon from President Fernandez.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy cheered the decision last week and said the women will not face further charges or jail time back home.

Zaknoun and Faye's pardons were granted after the two countries signed a convention that lets criminals serve jail sentences in their native lands. Some 35 Dominicans are imprisoned in France, while at least 17 other French citizens are currently jailed in the Dominican Republic.

Since I am a barbarian Viking I'll have to keep up to your expectation. I couldn't care less to hide any pervertions if I had some.

But have look into what the representatives of the catholic church in Ireland has admitted lately. Those representatives done what they have done to people trusting them are the worst scumbags of the world.

Another brilliant example of separation of powers.

The President (executive) undoing the judicial.

Maybe they should rewrite (again) the constitution so the President also be Attorney general, president of the Senate and Chief justice.

Positive: we'd get rid of all the judges and fiscals, so mo' money for the electrical bill.

A little pressure from the Frogs and the Dominican government folds like a lawn chair. Do you think Dominican women convicted of trafficking would have been released after a year ? Perhaps the DR should apply the same treatment that a British citizen got in China last weekend for trafficking, a 7.62mm round to the head.

In the DR case it shows if you'r a White European female, you do not have to obey another countries laws. In the Chinese case that trafficker will never traffic drugs in China again .(remenber, China is fully cognizant of what the British opium trade did to the country)

The new constitution ,which no one seems to have seen ,was drafted by politicians and approved by all politicians and the system of Presidential pardons which is also in place in the USA was retained ...yes Water Polo the constitution should be changed ,,,by the people and not by politicians.

Viking, you are disgusting. Catholics priests actions towards innocents is disgusting. That the these two women deal that junk in my country and spread their poison and are now appointed "ambassadors". That is the height of disgust and a disgusting insult to the Dominican people that two criminals are pardoned then rewarded once they arrive to their country. They should be humble and silent. Sarkozy lost whatever respect I had for him. Europe for all it's freedoms and rights is a sad place.

I see. So if drug dealers are pretty teen aged girls from France (I know, I'm being rather kind) their government will intervene on their behalf if they where to ever get caught. Case in point. Nice.

Yeaaaaaa two young girls most likely with money were not stupid enough to try taking some of the drugs they were using in this beautiful island back home.... riiiight. They are just lucky our president doesn't have a pair. They need to stop letting foreigners think they can make a mockery of the law and get away with it or this will continue to happen. Just from their names you know they are of Arabic/Middle eastern origin. This pleaing from a French government that pardons a child molester because he is an "artist" give me a break.

These international agreements are in place world wide now but normally mean that the convicted person spends most of his time in a prison in his home country ..it suits countries where the offence was committed because they do not have the huge cost of maintaining these people .
However ,in this case the young girls will not spend more time in prison in France ..i do not know why but Madame Sarkozy probably difficult to argue against.

LIE-onel Fernandez pardoned a Billion Dollar embezzler, so what is to let two girls go who got caught with a little blow or smack. Especially after the gratuities he and Margarita got during their recent trip to "Viva La France."

Yuca, you are entitled to your opinion, however for your own sake I do not hope you consider my joke to be at the same level of disgrace as to the Irish.

Those two chicks were smuggling dope out of the country. I do hope they were not innocent, and got a fair trail in DR, however allmost everybody on DT claims the judicial system to be corrupt and not too relaiable. I suppose they had french representatives at the court to secure as fair a trail as they could, and beeing in prison since 2008, the french if sure they were innocent would have intervened. It is of course an offense they are not jailed in France and do their full therm. But you know mrs. Sarkozy beeing a good looking lady and these 2 chicks as well. If they were 2 guys they would have been thrown in jail upon arrival in France. Thats the European way of equality. Europe is not a sad place, but right now a very cold place.
