Santo Domingo.– Dominican police said on Friday that they arrested one
of their own and a soldier who were part of a robbery ring. Taken into custody were police Cpl. Edison Feliz Cuevas and army officer Tarzan Figuereo.
According to the National Police, four civilian suspects were also nabbed, while 15 others remain at large.
The
gang preyed on Dominicans arriving at Santo Domingo’s Americas
International Airport after trips abroad, according to the police
report.
Gang members followed people from the airport to their
homes, where they forced them at gunpoint to hand over money, documents
and other valuables, the report said.

Like the street dogs of the barrios...these perros preyed on "their own" ......LIE-onel should lift the restrictions on firearms for homeowners and allow the citizens to defend themselves.
In many states in the EEUU, the "Castle Doctrine" allows homeowners to shoot and kill robbers outside their homes....and inside their homes. This makes identification of the bad guys easy and would send a loud message when COPS have to come retrieve "their own" dead.

Gun laws in DR make no sense and are archaic. The military have a long history of getting "perks", from always asking for and getting "freebies" to being out of reach from civilian laws, rules and regulations.
All kinds of rules, restrictions and regulations for civilian gun owners, but very little screening and tests for police and military.
Police and armed forces members are recruited from the poor, disadvantaged and uneducated and given weapons, to then easily abuse the uniform or badge they carry.
Military and police have to be "reengineered" and the bad apples weeded out. Pay has to increase according to civilian private salaries, so the military and police will not be duped into committing felonies, and abuse against civilians, just trying to keep up with "the joneses".

Approximately two weeks ago this similar scenario, of being followed from the airport, occurred to friends of mine who where retuning from shopping trip to New York for their wedding.
They were to get married that following weekend. The father of the groom was shot in the leg when he tried to defend the family with his legally owned weapon. It was very sad to see him in a wheelchair at the ceremony, he is lucky to have survived as the bullet came within millimeters of artery
I just called them and gave the names of these alleged suspects, hopefully there is some connection.

These are decent people who have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. He helped his wife get a law degree, one son (the groom) is an engineer, the only daughter is an architect and the younger son is in medical school.

I have found it just as easy to get a handgun in the United States as it was for me to get in Santiago. I am not a criminal and my family has given me the experience of handling and firing guns since we were all young children. There is nobody trying to disarm law abiding citizens. VC you should spend some more of your energy trying to gain simple liberties for the Cuban people which very few seem to have currently. I have spent quite a bit of time in Cuba as well so I am aware of the plight of the Cuban people. Travellers are a target for the criminal element of society in many countries including the USA , Spain. Italy , Costa Rica,Peru, Dominican Republic and India . I mention these countries because I have been involved in nasty incidents in all of them ..it is not just the DR where the problems occur. Bus stations, rail stations, tourist areas and airports are favourite locations for trouble. For many years in Calcutta and Delhi ,taxis fron the airport has to travel in convoy with a police guard at night ,the bus station in downtown San jose is notorious as is the cathedral square in Milan.
I have never had a problem at SDQ but several times late at night I have been nervous returning to la Romana and one night my taxi driver ran straight into a police or army road blockade , all men were wearing balaclavas over their heads and were heavily armed ..rather scary

Perhaps it is the govt controlled media blacking out what is really occurring in the USA which is a daily loss of your rights as US Citizens through presidential orders and the appointments of unelected officials removing your rights systematically. Somehow, most americans are not taking note and putting this puzzle together. As a law abiding responsible firearms owner I'm troubled by the graphic violence and video games played and viewed by our Children, I call it numbing of the senses and that violence is acceptable, and to think many don't believe violence on T.V or at the movies don't effect the minds of our Children.
I am very scared of my firearms and have great respect in fact the day I lose fear / respect it will be the day I'll turn them over or sale them all.
Almost forgot...In my home my Children treat there nurf guns, toy guns, BB / pellet guns & rifles, air soft guns with the same respect as the real ones, we also treat them like the real loaded ones and keep them locked at all times.

If only criminals are allowed to possess guns. Then only criminals will have guns.
THANKS FOR THOSE WORDS OF WISDOM TO LIVE BY.
Sir, true sometimes words can hurt more then physical pain.
I believe a armed society is a polite society.
Take care while on the high seas, response time by the C G can take hours.
