SANTO DOMINGO. - The new head of the United States Southern Command, general Douglas Fraser, last night urged more cooperation between his country’s and Dominican Republic’s Armed Forces, to successfully face the common challenges.  “The cooperation between our Armed Forces is even more important today, as we work together to face the future challenges of the 21st century.”

The Southern Commando chief said he expects to find opportunities for the U.S. and Dominican military to work jointly as companions to benefit the population. “Both countries can provide security, hope and more opportunities.”

The U.S. senior military commander spoke in a reception in his honor hosted by Commercial attaché Christopher Lambert in the United States Embassy, to which the commanders of the Dominican Navy, Air Force, and Army attended.

Fraser, who is the first U.S. Air Force general to be reach the post, came to the country to participate in the Caribbean Nations Security Conference (CANSEC 09), slated for this week, where the region’s security agencies will analyze joint strategies.

Invade Venezuela,,,leave Cuba alone with Castro brother, it is not in the Dominican foreign interest to have a democratic Cuba and a competetor for Tourism,,right now all the foreing invesment is going to DR..if you open Cuba,,i am should that will stop,,,Cuba will be cheaper, there will be billion of dollar and Euro going into cuba intead of going to DR and DR will have an economic crisis since all our industry depend on tourism.

It will be a real drought in the DR for a while when Cuba goes capitalist.....they will suck all the oxygen out of the air and it will be Plantanos for us

The only reason people from the U.S. visit the DR is because they can't go to Cuba legally....yeah I know SOME do, but the majority don't....

WHEN Cuba opens up the DR, the Bahamas, Jamaica and even Key West will feel the rapid decompression and left over vacuum from the exodus of tourists.

If you think the rum, cigars and gyrls in the DR are good...wait til you get to Varadero!

True, the the day will come sooner or later. The sentiments in the air are already starting to turn with talk from the new US President. It will be a slower, stair-stepped change but it will happen.

You would think that the other countries would read the hand writing on the wall and start to diversify their economies and take advantage of strengths such as free trade agreements, lower shipping time & costs to both US and Canadian ports (vs Asia), cheap labor and lower language barrier (spanish in major US markets and ESL). The RD Gov should be focused on more of a call center, manufacturing corridor along the Haitian border towns as well as a National Rail system to move both goods & people to/from major cities and ports better, faster & cheaper.

More energy independence via both solar & nuclear energy to run rail (eliminating old gas guzzling smoke poluting buses on the roads would be a plus as well).

My frustration is. no one has a clue!

it will take 10 years of heavy building of hotels golf courses and infrastructure to catch up.....the hotels they have now are cheese boxes and they have no golf courses to speak of

Cuba has a worse infrastructure at the moment for sure. I can guarantee once the flow of $$ comes they will surpass the DR in months. We will then have to survive solely on our drug trade and it will be obvious.

the flow of dominicans heading back home will not stop and the euro own too many hotels in DR to let them go bad. If cuba gets better than this will make prices more competative for all of us

I don't see Cuba becoming a liberal democratic capitalist country anytime soon. I'm not worried about them taking away tourism from the DR. Cuba will probably become a Western European-style social democracy but that's at least two decades away and by then the DR will be a developed country.

And even if Cuba goes capitalist I think it could help the DR because it will get people interest in the area a lot more. A person could say "Hey let's stop in Santo Domingo on our way to Havana"...

One possible solution for DR to benefict is to help the haitian improve they economy this way we have accept to the Cuban market because of being closer to Haiti, in this matter we could benefict as well,,but it take leader and a vision to have this done, and the haitian will more likely will not agree to that

I did some calculations and Haiti won't be a developed country until at least 2060. The D.R. is on pace to be developed by 2030.

Edward even a broken colck is right twice a day!

Your commentary is the most probable scenario.

It is interesting how all these advocates Capitalism here on DT are afraid of a little competition from Cuba Linda!

Puerto Rico has more infrastructure than DR 24/7 electricity and other amenities we have held our own against our Puerto Rican brothers and we will do the same when Cuba comes online!

We all three have our similarities and uniqueness that what makes so attractive as destinations, there will be enough tourist to go around for all!

IF Cuba was to become a free and democratic society the DR will suffer big time.

Forget Tourism. think about what would happen if you introduce modern agricultural techniques in Cuba.
It will also take time for labor costs to catch up so manufacturers will run to Cuba as well. Then there is shipping with Cuba being more geographically advantageous for US-Latin America trade especially once the new Panama Canal expansion is done.

There you go put you right foot in your right wing mouth again.

No, listen to me, No island in the Caribbean has more of a diverse climate than La Española. DR can produce a more varied selection of agricultural products than any country in the Caribbean period!

So even if Cuba were to miraculous develop over night the Miami mafia, assuming the Cubans on the island would allow them back in, could not create the natural climate and conditions DR has.

Josie,

Wow............so sad.
It isn't even worth the effort to point out the holes in your argument. it is easier to watch you step in them..

Here. Look at this list of top DR agriculture exports.
sugarcane, coffee, cotton, cocoa, tobacco, rice, beans, potatoes, corn, bananas.

Now tell me how the DR's diverse Climate makes it better to produce these than Cuba!

Let me know if you need a shovel

Let me help you Cubanito:

Challenges and Opportunities of Agro-Industry Projects

The Dominican Republic has traditionally been an agricultural country and is the
largest exporter in the Caribbean of agricultural products such as sugar, rice, beans,
coffee, cocoa and tobacco. The country is also becoming a major producer and
exporter of organic bananas to Europe and the United States.

Actually i don't have time to sit in front of Public library Computer and post all day like you do. You see I have various businesses to run. I am not on Welfare like you.

Now as for your post. Yes right now the DR is more productive that Cuba in regards to agriculture. That can be attributed 100% to the political and economic system in Cuba.

I stated that if Cuba was to become a free and democratic country it would quickly outproduce the DR. Cuba has more arable land. It is closer to major markets for export. and labor will be cheaper.

Sure there would be some crops that could be produced in the DR but not in Cuba because of Climate but that would be a small percentage.

I love Puerto Rico and my Boricua brothers!

It is beautiful a island and the personal hospitality is second to none in the WORLD!

However, with all due respect, it is to Americanized for my taste and just how LIE-onel Fernandez has converted DR in to METROLANDIA, PR was converted by the statehooders into GRINGOLANDIA. I use to go their very often now I avoid it because I feel I am in New Jersey with a mall every two miles.

The beauty of these islands is their unique characters. However, the unscrupulous tourist and business developers, trying to make quick buck and the local corrupt politicians ready to oblige them, under the guise of modernity, have almost ruined the natural beauty and idiosyncrasy of these otherwise paradises.

¡So Coqui si Gringo no! Amo a Puerto Rico!

josean I appreciate what you say but that is what happens when you increase the standard of living ....people buy junk and plastic things only a few can discriminate in their tastes .....the same future awaits the DR as their standard of living increases .....more gold chains with gold toothed thugs listening to bad music ....very few have the education to choose the finer things intellectually and otherwise .....Sorry you are talking about nostalgia
