The U.S. operated a site similar to this one in the Southwest, near Pedernales.

SANTO DOMINGO. - President Leonel Fernandez today announced that the Government will soon call for tenders to buy full range air surveillance radars, after repeated and unsuccessful requests for the donation of that equipment from the United States.

The chief executive received an Honorary Doctorate’s degree, to mark the Dominican Air Force’s 61st anniversary. He said his Administration makes an effort to make that military branch more technical.

In that regard Fernandez said the military’s modernization should come jointly with a commitment with the nation, and urged the members of the Armed Forces to stay away from drug trafficking.

For several years in the late 1980s the United States operated an air surveillance in the Southwest, but refused to donate it and took it back, leaving the entire Dominican southern shore without any tracking capability, and the resulting increase of drug-laden flights form South America.

LF, purchase the latest gizmos and technologies, but if your soildiers can't read and write, how long do you think these marvels of warfare will last? Please stop blaming others for your shortcomings and weakness. It is getting rather tiresome. Yes and do urge your troops to stay away from narco trafficing. Perhaps you should be a bit more direct and ORDER them to and crush the culprits that do not comply. That would be a decent start. Are you not the Chief ! Grow a pair Leonel.

Radars are needed in the D.R., I hope they plan to build a network with a centralized command. Putting a site in the south-south east because thats where the drug planes come from won't do, the pilots will only fly a diffrent route. Wonder who will win the bid, the French, Russians, Chinese or the good ole' USA?

What good will this radar and Super Tucano aircraft do, if you can not shoot the smugglers down? How exactly are we planning on forcing them to land, then arrest them? They will be laughing all the way back to Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba or wherever they originated from. Besides, our pilots are probably on the take anyway, and they will just give them the "thumbs up" sign and wish them a safe and uneventful return trip.

Glomar good point, but only those planes that pay the toll will get the "Thumbs Up". All others will be shot down or shot at, including a few general aviation and commercial aircraft. But not to worry. The Radars, if ever installed, will only be functional for a few months, due to too many apagones.

What about a "lie Detector", much-much cheaper and radomly served to your arm forces.

No ground support, no drugs delivered. So, the radar won't solve anything at all, if the people operating it, are the same receiving the drugs.

It would be good if they could smake a profit - for example every plane reported to US heading for PR , Florida etc. 100,000 dollars. Any plane forced to land auction the plane. Also the DR airfoce could do joyrides such as the Russian Air Force. Attendance at airshow in the region could be another earner and help in siezure of ships fishing without permit; assistance with marine salvage when vessels are in distress or outside permitted routes. Escort of private planes is another possibility - visiting VIP's etc. Only heroin and maruarana sized has a legitimate market. Heroin for medical processing and maruarna for export to countries where use is legal.
