SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez pledged to the ruling PLD party’s senior leaders that he won’t seek the Presidency in the 2012 elections, said the entity’s general secretary Reinaldo Pared  today.

He said on Fernandez’s initiative the Political Committee decided to establish one consecutive reelection in the bill for the constitutional reform, without being able to seek a third term.

However a President who has governed twice would have the opportunity to make a bid four years later.

Interviewed by Cesar Medina, Cristian Jiménez and Luisín Mejía on ColorVision, the Senate president affirmed that the PLD’s top organism would adopt the measure, for which he said has no doubts it would be approved.

When reminded that even if it’s approved in the Constitution, it wouldn’t affect Fernandez because the law isn’t retroactive, Pared said only that it was the President himself who proposed it. “The decision is what was agreed in the Political Committee, and on the President’s initiative, that he would not aspire again.”

I will believe it when I see it. I was certain Leonel was following the Chavez model. Maybe Prez LF has had a reality check and knows he has no credibility with the western world (USA, EU & Canada). I remember he was upset that no high level US officials came to the Prez Leonel inauguration.... later he still held hurt feelings and stay home in the RD (not attending Obama's). But no one missed Leonel's absence.

It's time for the RD to get their own house in order before advising the US on anything!

If Leonel doesn't run in 2012 say goodbye to progress unless some great intellectual decides to run for President. Hopefully Junot Diaz runs!!!

I would think progress should be a loosely employed term when referring to this administration. Sure, many edifices, roads, METRO, etc. have been built, and some would argue that the country is very clean and beautiful. However, at what cost? Future generations will sadly be saddled with the heavy debt of many of these questionable projects. Furthermore, DR's reputation has been guttered in this administration's tenure and that damage is so deep that it may prove difficult to assess its full extent.

I shed no tears for the eventual demise of this administration-good riddance!!!!!!!

Later LF will say, it is not me who wants to stay here, the people is asking for it and as I am a patriot I will sacrifice myself in order to benefit my country. As father (Balaguer) as son, or in other words, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

He doesn't have to run again, all he has to do is prep a puppet that'll show face while whoever runs his government continues to do from behind the scenes. Then when that person messes up, he'll be back like the messiah in 2016.

I'll beleive when I see it. Maybe he's planning a comeback in 2016? A puppet in for 4 years and he comes back and picks up where he left off?

Entonces............ Candelier in 2012. Mano duro.

He's up to something & it's not going to be good.. He's not doing anything now except working on his precious metro, which we all know is more important than water, education, power throughout the country, and healthcare.

Amazing, Edward thinks Leonel is a god send.

He is the biggest crook going and probably stole enough money to last the extra 4 years already.

St. James will never have the pull that Danilo Medina has within the Party, his forces will not stand for this and will not be denied once again. They deferred last time to Lie-onel as sitting incumbent that had already been (unfortunately for the country) president twice.

This time they will go for the jugular, pardon the pun, St. James aka Johnny Appleseed won't have a prayer!

Guillermo vistete que si vas!

As Yul Brynner said:

"So let it be written; so let it be done."

Guillermo Moreno Presidente 2012!

A small revision is in order again:

Barrack Obama an extreme long-shot from the far left!

Obama Presidente 2008!

Guillermo Moreno Presidente 2012!
