SANTO DOMINGO.- The first Dominican assemblyman in the U.S., Adriano Espaillat, said Tuesday he agrees with the cleanup of the National Police, where 22 of its members were expelled for links with organized crime and drug trafficking.

“I believe it’s the first path to recover the citizens’ confidence, of how the citizenship can go to law enforcement agencies if they feel there are people  involved in drug trafficking. I believe it’s a very positive step.”

He said in the 1990s in New York City, where those cases also occur, there were as many as 130 homicides, compared with this year’s single case, a problem he said resulted from the police’s involvement with crime and drug trafficking.

The assembly talked to reporters after signing an agreement to collaborate with the Council for Dominican Communities Abroad (CONDEX), and the Dominican-American Round Table, to help the Dominican diaspora.

I agree this is a real positive development. It is good to see Dominican leaders who are stateside who can have a more positive influenced on the RD Gov. Unfortunately, there is nothing about prosecutions (as is often the case). Consequently, there is never a real deterrent crime in the RD!

I hope to see some progress & real results ASAP in my barrio ENANCHE CAONABO of Santiago also.

The message sent by expelling these corrupt policemen is that if you get caught you will not be punished, you will be fired. What kind of work do you think these cops are going to look for? Maybe something where they can make a lot of money quickly? Only this time without the uniform.
