Santo Domingo.– More than ten searches have been carried out by the Dominican police in different places of the country looking for more evidence to solve the Parmalat robbery attempt.

According to Major General Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin, chief of the National Police, in the next hours the names of the rest of the persons involved would be revealed. “We are looking for seven persons, who might be implicated in the crime, but we only know their nicknames,” he told reporters.

On Sunday the police arrested a key piece in the case, Felix Ortega, who has been tied to the gang that was led by Air Force Major Jose Luis Vargas Cuello and who could provide more info on the location of the rest of the gang. With Ortega, four people have been arrested and accused of taking place in the Thursday night assault on the Parmalat plant.

Yesterday the police searched the eastern part of Santo Domingo province looking for new evidence to solve the case in which several members of the Air Force and some civilians are implicated.

A house in La Cayena Street, in the Prados Oriental, on the San Isidro highway, was purchased by a family member of one of the men involved in the assault. The group used it as a storage deposit of the stolen merchandise.

How about you all look for the money?? And when you make arrests, please ensure you reveal whole names, not just indirect references to "suspects."

This a good idea, however, based on the current compliance it probably won't work, but how about if we have everyone entering the police or armed forces submit net worth statements and periodically have someone check them for dramatic increases.

Give Kelvin Mateo Vargas and Wilman Cuevas Cespedes a big raise.

I think the younger generation has morals. Get rid of the old ones.

Kudos to you guys.

The money was found and lost again but this time it won't be found again. I'm not trying to lower expectations just laying the truth on the table

I should've known better!! What was I thinking?? I'm so disgusted with this poor excuse for a country I can puke! It's become culturally accepted values to steal, lie, cheat, screw & anything else that leads to total and complete perdition. I'm really nauseous - really! Not in a figurative way, I'm really, truly, physically nauseous at all the stench that comes out of the politics and institutionalized corruption schemes in DR. President Fernandez needs to stop theorizing so damn much and start rolling up his sleeve & getting his hands dirty. Be accountable Fernandez - BE ACCOUNTABLE. All these things are happening under YOUR watch. True leaders hold themselves accountable for what happens under their leadership rather than give speeches all day long trying to undermine the situation.

Their seems to be a three-way judicial system in DR:

1) for the rich and powerful
2) the military
3) the poor

How could these so-called officers perpetrate a crime of this magnitude without prosecution? Had this crime been committed by a few fellas from Gualey, then they would be rotting in perpetuity at "La Victoria".

They should take a novel approach;

Disband the police, the DNCD, Immigration, Customs and place the military in charge of everything. Instead of having multiple corrupt elements looking for ways to scam the general public you would only have one to watch out for. I am sure there are responisble people in all of those groups but they are being overshadowed by all of the headlines.

Texasshoe,

You might be onto something here. I like your proposal...it reduces number of players...and concentrates accountability in single entity. It should also produce some serious savings in terms of reduced bureaucracy and associated services, etc. Furthermore, it could add proper balance to our executive branch's excesses. This is a start....I like it!

Should we fill in the rest of the title? Fill in the blanks?

Such as Santo "Rafael de Guzman"?

I think I get the picture.

This is very embarrassing, how can we trust our armed forces! Something needs to be done; the government is not doing enough. How about they punish this guys and make them return the money. The Dominican government is corrupted big time! I think its time that the people take actions and demand for justice.

Andre, you can't have both. you cannot expect them to punish the guys AND return the money! where would be the point in stealing it in the first place?

It is clear that there are corrupt members of the military that should be weeded out and purged.
On the other hand the public demands a lot from the members of the armed forces and pays them very little. A private makes a little over $100 a month and all the other ranks are paid accordingly.
The career members of the armed forces really have to become very resourceful to be able to survive on their measly salaries, and keep up with the rise in the standard of living, and that invites corruption.
Many times they have to do side jobs or have businesses to supplement their income.
Again the public places very high demands on them and rewards them with very little pay.
So the mixture of having in society's mist somebody with a uniform and a accessibility to weapons of war and combining that with lack of decent income can be volatile.

Corruption in POP
The General Prosecutor's office, the National Police and the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) have ordered the arrest of three district prosecutors from Puerto Plata, Grimilda Disla, Wilfredo Martinez and Ramon Nunez Liriano, accused of collaborating in a drug trafficking network on the north coast. The three will be transferred to Santo Domingo for further investigations. This is the latest development in the uncovering of a widespread drug network that led to the dismissal of 30 law enforcement officials in Puerto Plata. Disla, Martinez and Nunez have refused to comment and there is no word as to how deep the drug network runs in Puerto Plata and whether or not it has connections to other networks operating in the country or abroad.

Leonel Fernandez,
Where is Luis Vargas singing today?
He has a 7 year old child out of wed lock and he is not supporting her emotinally or more importantly financially. This child deserves to be treated better and you have turned your back on her.
Leonel send him back to New York City so that the Family Court can deal with this character.
His inner circle has been advised that he has this child and they have not return calls to mediate this matter. Perhaps he wants to be embarrassed at a concert when he is served with court papers. ALL FOR NON PAYMENT OF CHILD SUPPORT.
