SANTO DOMINGO. - Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez dismissed the U.S. State Department’s report as unimportant, and said that nation should be more concerned with what happens in Iraq and Guantanamo.

Regarding the report citing police excesses, weakness in Justice and government corruption, the prelate said the U.S. should improve their human rights because, “they’ve always discriminated against the black world, then why walk in other people's yards if yours are worse than anybody else’s problems."

The cardinal spoke after heading a mass in the Santo Domingo State University UASD, as part of the commencement ceremony for more than 1,000 students.

Perhaps he thinks that, if the state were to correct its own deficiencies, it would then have time enough to watch the ones of the Church on this country, which are not a small thing, mind you.

USA should fix the problems of their own country, as they shurley have problems. They allways like to put the nose in others country businesses. Last time in 1965 we had here a USA invasion in Dominican Republic.

I can not remember when was the last time that Dominican Republic was offensive to some other country?

Maybe we should give some economic help to USA? Send blankets and platano? Maybe Pipiyota as well.

It's a sad commentary on Dominican society when the local cardinal assumes that he has the right to speak for the entire society on an international level. Don't the Dominican people elect others to represent them? Is the DR a democracy or a theocracy? One has to ask the question because at times, particularly those times when this old goat sticks his head out of whatever crevasse it usually abides in, the lines seem blurred.

Keep in mind, the RD Gov prefers that the Cardinal speak out against the US Report because as a representative of the church he actually has "more credibility" than the RD Gov or any official thereof. So, the RD Gov officials are silent (for now) but give the Cardinal first response in order to appeal to the believers that are working in US Gov officials.

The Cardinal makes a valid & undeniable point based on US history. Recall, when GW Bush was Governor a black man was chained to the back of a pickup truck & dragged to death in Jasper, TX (while an NBA star offered to pay for the funeral the Gov Bush was "silent on the entire incident"). Bush's silence told many where he stood on this issue and he went on to capture the huge southern electoral votes from most states (vs. another Southerner Al Gore) for President.

But I'd respectfully advise the Cardinal that two wrongs don't make a "right". That is, one man (nations) sin does not clean another's....

Washington should just f*ck off and take care of its own human rights abuses. The U.S. government gets in other countries' internal affairs and then it wonders why they are not liked very much around the world. I bet most people in the DR are in favor that authorities start killing criminals (talking about criminals) and are against "human rights" organizations.

DR has lots of problems that it needs to deal with. The U.S. needs to stop policing the world. It's a very hypocritical gesture to try to be the world police when you country is going through similar or worse situations. Get your house in order. China also stated the same sentiments as Cardinal Nicky. It's a good response in my opinion.

Take of the Citizens of the United States like myself who are going through a terrible economic crisis. Worry about finding ways to get the country back on track and not about what Domincans, Chinese, etc are doing.

The Cardinal is right because there is a lot of discrimination in the U.S. , but also the DR is a poor country and so many things will be wrong for the reason that there is no money not even to fix the roads. The government does not care about education, why it will care about human rights and try to improve it? The problems of the Dominican Republic can only be fixed through better education; not announcements on TV, but education in the classroom. The mean time, poor education will lead to unemployment, garbage every where, unable to pay the utility bills, etc.

The crime involving soldiers and police has raised alarm among local business and church leaders who fear it will damage the Dominican Republic's image as a major Caribbean tourist destination for North American and European tourists.

2. Why are my Dominican inlaws repulsed anytime they see your face or hear your voice?
3. Does the Pope agree with your methods and crap that comes out of your pie-hole ?
4. If you pull that hat down a bit and cut some eye-holes out ... well need I say more?

I am sorry for your loss!

I could be wrong but I have never seen a picture of this "red bird" comforting any poor person. Remember in 2007 during the hurricanes and floods he was no where to be found. But let one of his multimillionaire friends, with wealth from dubious means, get stepped on the toe and he goes to DEFCON 1 in their defense.

He is like any other political lackey, he is not defending Lie-onel Fernandez, who I suspect in private he sees as a "DARKIE," but rather his BOTELLA.

In a country were schools are needed so desperately it is outrageous that the government builds churches at the expense of more important priorities.

JD,
In response to your comment on the James Byrd killing in Texas, Bush was not silent on the issue and the persons who commited the crime were tried, convicted and sentenced to Death. There was a outcry by numerous grups for stronger (already existing) "Hate crime" legislation which Bush refused to act on by the premise "that all crimes of this nature are hate crimes". It should be noted that the convicted murders were white supremacists and this could have happened to a hispanic, Egyptian, Indian or any other person who was not one of them, including another white person who did not see things "their way".

That report had nothing to do with the present policies of the Obama administration. It was done under Bush's state department guidelines.
As much as I dislike Chavez and his obvious leanings to the "dark side", the claim for the extradition of Luis Posadas Carriles is not entirely out of the question, unless some new facts come to light,
and he may have a genuine beef with the US since Posada caused the death of many innocent civilians
by his terrorist acts blowing up a civilian plane, and should not be protected by US laws.

There it is...the typical Dominican attitude....it is not our fault...blame someone else...which is exactly the reason they have so many problems. So many and so serious that it is gaining world attention. So join your cardinal buddy, who is oh so knowledgable on worldly events (what has he done for the DR lately other than complain) , and wake up and quit avoiding the issues ( by the way where are you ignoring the problem from???? the US ah, why is that?)

Read my post "He knows our weakness" meaning the obvious. You're definitely naive in assuming the opposite.
As an example, do you know that not too long ago there was a silly article published in a Miami newspaper implying that Dominican women are trying to deny our afro ethnicity by straightening our hair? When this is a fashion worldwide to have straight hair up to last year, even in china straighten their hair, Silly isn't it?
