Santo Domingo.- Five manatees have been found dead in the last six months along the coast near the Dominican northeast city Samaná, said the Environment Ministry Tuesday, one day after the finding of a new corpse of the protected marine mammal native to tropical estuaries.

It said a man was arrested for allegedly causing the death of a 2.5 meter long adult female found trapped with traumas and lacerations caused by a rope and illegal drag nets, in mangroves on the river Colorao, near the town Sanchez, Samaná province.

Technicians believe the manatee was alive when taken to that area, where it had been dead for at least four days when it was found decomposed, after local fishermen alerted the Environment Ministry. It said it’s the second female of the protected species to have been killed in Sanchez in less than one week.

It said the use of illegal drag nets by some fishermen in Sanchez and Sabana de la Mar causes the death of marine animals, prompting Environment officials to seize more than one hundred illegal and outboard motors and nets in the last two months, used in that "destructive and criminal" type of fishing.

I'm impressed that the Environment Ministry actual would appear to function and take action when so many departments don't. However experience tells me that the conficated equipment should be destroyed or some thing else to ensure that it does not find its way back into the hands of its original owners. You know what a mean, a back door garage sale.

Education, Education ! btw, bernies, the manatee (sea cow) is eatable. Use to be a prime source of red meat for sailors years ago. Actually, it is very tasty, Taste something like a cross between a Bald Eagle and a Wooping Crane. The local folks in the area know who killed this poor mammal, as everything in those regions is known. Just offer a reward, say $20K DOP, you will find the culprit(s).

sadly, juango, these creatures are not being killed by people who are looking for food. they fall victim either to illicit methods for harvesting seafood, or , the age old Dominican pastime of killing animals for laughs.

So true Dred, you are most correct. Large seine nets have been outlawed for several years in the Samana area (and all coastal areas of the DR). But any weekend you can go to Rincon, Limon, or Portillo and watch the local fishermen work them. People (tourist, visitors, MG and Politur) watch and take photos, thinking it is great. The MG and Politur are there to receive a few small fish, free. I guess that is their compensation. I have seen sea ferns, small sea turtles, and numbers of juvenile fish brought up on the beach.

Juango, stopping fishermen rom using seine nets should not be a difficult exercise. well, yes, given the level of payoff, bribe and corruption. but if the environmental protective services handed out draconian sentences for anyone caught with a seine, this crap would end , and really quickly. it is the most antiquated, bizarre, wasteful, destructive method of inshore fishing, something which has '17TH CENTURY" stamped all over it!

Could it be the new under sea power cable from colombia ? jejeje

"SANTO DOMINGO. - A submerged power line from Colombia to Dominican Republic could mean savings for the country on as much as 50% of the energy it consumes."

This is so sad and a shame that people are still killing these harmless gentle and endagered animals. The government needs to set harsh punishments for these neglegant murderers.

the idiot vacanos has to post his irrelevant, mindless non sequitur , to remind us that he is alive. never one to say anything intelligent, he brings up afro centricity in a thread dealing with manatees. now do you understand why there are some people who advocate that countries should be run by dictators? what purpose is achieved by giving the vote to a retard such as this? minds like these belong on apes, who ought to be led around on a tether. he cannot get it through his obdurate skull that nobody takes him seriously, except, perhaps , his fellow squeegee men on amsterdam avenue.

When I lived in P.R. it was the same scenario, if it moves kill it. Mass ignorance is the root of this destruction. I once saw an osprey killed by two navy personal in La Romana. The osprey was drying his wings on the river banc. With his wings opened up all the way and these two brain dead idiots rowed thier yola accross the river and whacked it with an oar like it was a machete. They broke it''s wing clean off. I yelled at them not to do it and they told me to shut up and one of them put his hand on his gun when he said it.

As I have said before, If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.

Absolutely appalling!!! This is a total waste and they didn't even perpetrate this crime for food! This had nothing to do with being poor or hungry.....they did it because they are ignorant Neanderthals!

We need to be better stewards of the gifts of nature we've been entrusted with, to ensure that they are passed on to future generations. These people need to be held accountable, even if we should have to resort to external pressure.

Don't these people understand that this unique mammal constitutes an attraction for bringing tourists to the area and promoting employment and income and growth? They are sort of shooting themselves in the foot with these actions.

i am flabbergasted to see wherein vacanos characterises my disagreement with the wanton, indiscriminate killing of animals as "a joke on Dominicans". then again, i should not be, given his intellectual level. a word of caution, vacanos. be careful in America when you get the urge to run over animals on the sidewalk. there are lawsin that country which go after people who are predisposed to be cruel to animals. and not just laws, but citizens , too. remember that there is such a thing as a "citizens' arrest" in that country. so i suggest you take out your uncontrolled aggression on nintendo
