Santo Domingo.- With teary eyes and recalling family stories, Johnny Pacheco, credited with creating the genre Salsa, received the El Soberano (sovereign), top prize of the Casandra awards, from Rafael Menicucci, president of the brewers of Presidente beer.

“This is a very great moment in my life. I would give anything for my father to be here, he gave me a harmonica when I was six years old, because he knew that I had an ear for music, for me to become a musician. My other brothers were ‘deaf’ and very out of tune,” Pacheco said, and thanked the social journalists grouped in Acroarte, all the Dominican people and Dominican National Brewery.

A great honor for him, and well deserved. It's a shame he had to get it presented by the president of the local beer company...

Presidente is the Dominican Republic and the Dominican Republic. The world's best beer. Only someone with no understanding of our country would insult a tradition.

Dixie you really are so new aren't you?. If you did not know La Cerveceria Nacional does more to promote and fund music, culture and the arts in the DR than many other cultural and governmental institutions. So don't knock Mr. Menicucci and Co. for they deserve the outmost respect and admiration for their contributions to Dominican society as a whole. Finally Johnny Pacheco wins his so deserve "Soberano". It was well overdue. Congrat!!!

Long time coming!

Maestro Pacheco, tu dia llego!

I went to Orchard Beach with friends who said that the dancing is great there in the summer.

The musician playing that sunday was Pacheco, I was so impressed with how he played that I walked over to him after the concert to congratulate him on how great he sounded he looked humbled at my words and thanked me. : )
I became a fan immediately... GOD BLESS PACHECO!!!

Muchas Felicidades a nuestro heroe olvidado de la musica. Its about time....I think his award and homenaje were the best thing about the whole night. He makes us Santiaguero's very proud and his music still has a great following in our city. Los domingos son de Salsa y Son as we say in Santiago on Sundays to spend our afternoon with our friends listening to all the great music from the past. Pachecos talent and contributions are often times overlooked by most, but he was a key player in the 70's when so much good music was made. Que viva el Maestro Pacheco.....que viva la musica....

CATALINA LA O

one of the greatest salsa songs of all time

Johnny Pacheco was, is and always will be a great source of pride for DR. His talents are unmatched to this day, specially in the era of so much garbage music, like regeatton and the so called merengue de calle.

bravo maestro, mucho se tardaron para reconocer tu contribucion a la musica latina.
