SANTO DOMINGO. - The Supreme Court’s Penal Chamber Wednesday declined to rule on the United States Embassy’s motion for continuance on their request to extradite Ernesto Bienvenido Guevara Diaz (Maconi).
The lawyer for the U.S. Analdi del Carmen Abreú asked the court to reschedule a hearing to file additional documents the New York federal authorities allegedly have in the case against Guevara.
Assistant prosecutor Gisela Cueto supported the motion, which was rejected by the defense lawyers.
The court headed by justice Julio Ibarra Rios, declined to rule on Abreu’s motion.
This was the first hearing against Guevara, sought in extradition by the New York’s Office of the Federal Prosecutor, which affirms that Maconi is part of the drug-trafficking ring headed by the convict Quirino Paulino, now being held in the U.S., after his December 2004 arrest with 1,387 kilos of cocaine.
