The snub could herald cooling DR-US relations after president Fernandez's bold relations with leaders such as Hugo Chavez.

Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo. - The Dominican Government today downplayed the United States decision to reject president Leonel Fernandez’s participation in the meeting of Central American leaders with vice president Joe Biden in Costa Rica Monday, for which he doesn’t feel as a victim.

“No way, and it’s better this way, they criticize president Fernandez so much for his travels” said Foreign Relations Carlos Morales by telephone to the FM station Z-101, less than one hour after that same radio aired the report.

The official said the Government is concentrating on the Summit of the Americas scheduled for April in Trinidad & Tobago with the presence of president Barack Obama.

Of course. They have no other options.

Possibly, the US wants to discuss some sensitive issues that they do NOT want Prez LF returning to share his notes with Hugo Chavez. The only way to prevent this info being shared is to specifically NOT invite Fernandez (also Lionel has more than enough things to fix at home).

Let me get this clear then, the DR obviously wanted to participate in the meeting and was denied.
It is like calling somebody and saying, "hey you are having a party and I am your friend so please invite me".
And then being responded to: "Oh well, yes I know that we are friends but I decided that you would not fit in the particular group of people that I have invited, and decided that it would be best if you didn't attend".
Our fault for wanting to be such brown nosers all the time and looking for a way to get out of the heat of the kitchen so much.
President Fernandez, do not let yourself be conned by your own party.
Fire the ministers that are not doing their job, no matter what!

It's a real shame, this is a major sign what the US thinks of the DR in terms of being a "credible politically run nation". Do you think this will be the last sign of a US shut out. I think not and things will get worse in the DR before they get better. How long will these people continue to run your country and it's reputation into the ground before the people say enough.

The truth is there is lots more dirty washing to be done before anyone in the DR is coming out with clean sheets.

I say that from now on we should accept no aid from the US regardless of the form that this aid takes. Let's cut the umbilical cord now. Let's throw in with Cuba. Let Castro help us out every time we go belly up with a flood or other natural disaster, and let him teach us how to run our economy. Seems like their's is booming. Let's ask Chavez to show us how to eliminate this free speech thing that some seem to find so important, and how we can increase the number of murders dramatically as he has done. Let´s let both of them come to our aid all the time. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Please!, PLEASE! Fernández showed his interest in an invitation and the answer was NO!, the group of presidents that is going to be in the meeting asked for his presence and the answer again was NO!, the group insisted (Costa Rica wanted the Dominican president over there) and the answer again was NO! This has nothing to do with Chavez or even Castro. Something serious is happening, more serious than his relations with those leaders. Corruption, drugs, the border and the Haitian problem, his political imprecision… everything? Something really serious is happening and the message to the world is going to hurt us.

All I have to say my friend is: Read The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria
The american century is OVER!!!
Excerpt:
"...American anxiety springs from something much deeper, a sense that large and disruptive forces are coursing through the world. In almost every industry, in every aspect of life, it feels like the patterns of the past are being scrambled. "Whirl is king, having driven out Zeus," wrote Aristophanes 2,400 years ago. And—for the first time in living memory—the United States does not seem to be leading the charge. Americans see that a new world is coming into being, but fear it is one being shaped in distant lands and by foreign people..."

How can the most indebted country in the face of the world, reject Leonel Fernandez.. What is this world coming to, although Fernandez's administration is a disastrous one in many aspects this is a terrible sign of disrespect. Maybe the Chinese and Saudi's will takeover the leadership of the World Bank and demand that the U.S. dollar be banned as the dominant world currency LOL. Afterall the U.S. is so indebted to these two nations, funny i heard from the mouth of the fed chairman that he agreed with the Chinese in creating a common currency? oops!!!!! Then the media tried to manipulate the information, and reported that later he had denied what he already said clearly under scrutiny funny.

Have you done the numbers of how much debt USA is in before you made that statement. Well here are some numbers

Just based on the recent "Bailout" each USA families have to pay 500 thousand dollar just to get off government debt and is estimated that it will take generations before we get out of debt. So how long do you think it will take to pay 500,000 dollars making payments of 30% tax rate which gets split into many directions and end up being more like a 2% of the 30%. now think about this for a while. This numbers are based on my case and the national avg could be lot lower than that.
the talk of a real Standard currency is already on the table since the dollar is not worth much now days.

Venezuela can handle socialism because it has a great amount of resources to support its GDP. The DR has not resources and the DR count on foreign investments. For Leonel Fernandez is better to promote stability and stop playing on both sides. The DR needs the United States, Canada, and Europe in order to promote the DR as a emerging economic where investors can invest with confidence. Leonel is getting influence by Chavez in exchange of cheap oil. Leonel is moving toward the wrong direction and he could lose many things. The problem is, that the poor people in the DR will suffer most of the consequences. The United States is one of our biggest trading partners.

One would have to be a bloody imbecile to discount the still relevant economic and military might of the USA. The present economic crisis is a world wide concern and, contrary to apparent popular beliefs, the US is in better position than most countries to weather the storm. Many European countries, for those of socialist leaning, are in deep S$%t [Ireland, Portugal, France, Greece, etc] economic trouble and face significant unrest at home as a consequence.

Like the mythical phoenix, the US shall rise again and infinitely stronger. Don't wish too hard for the emergence of China as an economic and military powerhouse, for they would have the resources [financial and people] & desire to conquer and rule the world for decades. I am by no means a Yankee-lover; but I tell you this: Given what China is doing in Africa right now; I would not want the Dominican Republic to be in their cross-hairs.

Granted, of all the ancient civilizations, (Egyptian, Roman, Greek, Ottoman, etc.) China is the only one still around. You don't get to last 2000 years (Imperial, Republic, Communist, and Corporate incarnations notwithstanding) unless you know how to play the game.

Unlike the U.S (for better or worse) China does not have a tradition of respecting Human Rights, Minority and/or Environmental rights. They have one goal and one goal only: To secure a stable source of raw materials with which to fuel it continuous growth. Nation-building, Fomenting Democracy and/or Development in other countries outside of china do not even factor in their thinking.
We are to them a resource to be exploited and nothing more...

It would be to our total advantage to learn Chinese, the Panamanians have passed a law doing exactly that. They have begun teaching Chinese from first grade and up starting in 07. What exactly has China done in Africa? Yes, they are searching for raw mateials to feed their growth but unlike Western powers for centuries, they dont pillage everything, install puppet governments and systematically destroy the environment of the local people. In fact from what I have read they have a simple system, we build your infrastructure, you give us your raw materials.

What has being lapdogs for the last decades gotten us? We should carve our path in this new century and look at our national interest first. I believe Leonel has done a great job reaching out to the world in the name of the Dominican nation. So we shouldnt have wanted to go to a lapdog party anyway, these slights have been happening for some time now. Lets say No to US imperialism and Yes to building our country on our own terms.

In Africa, China is a major investor. China imports more than 10 percent of its oil from Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, and Sudan, and obtains minerals such as copper from Zambia and Congo, platinum and chrome from Zimbabwe and South Africa, and much more. It also purchases large forests of African timber. None of that mercantile activity is objectionable to Africa or the United States, nor should Washington worry about Chinese infrastructural construction of ports, railways, and roads in Africa.

But China also supplies arms to Africa. It backs President Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, gives him aircraft and armored cars, and takes land and minerals in exchange. Oppression in Sudan is heavily facilitated by China, which trains the pilots who bomb Darfuri refugee camps and provides the weapons with which the janjaweed and others kill innocent civilians. More so, China pumps Sudan's oil, guards the oil wells and pipeline, runs the refinery, and funds President Omar al-Bashir, recently indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. If the Obama administration is going to reduce the killing fields in Darfur and remove Mugabe from power in Zimbabwe, it will need China's help.

And unlike America's faltering effort in Iraq, the Chinese ain't spreading democracy, folks. They're there to get what they need to feed the machine. The phenomenon even has a name on the ground in the sub-Sahara: the Great Chinese Takeout..."

anthonyC,
You fool!
Japan in the 1980s did not have 3.5 trillion (That's trillion with a T) in foreign reserves, a 6.5 GDP annual growth at a time the rest of the world is contracting; and economy which exports 40% of its GDP, a billion plus pool of cheap labor, etc. etc, etc.
Not to take China seriously is naive at least and suicidal at most.

DR has probalby pissed off China more than most other countries via its blatant overtures to Taiwan and its tacit and opportunistic support for that nation, which the Chinese view as a rogue province and not an independent nation. There could be hell to pay for this transgression, perrhaps way more than anticipated. Our leadership has clearly failed to fully consider the magnitude and extent of potential consequences of these actions.

BTW, I agree with most of the comments on Chinese activities in Africa.

I know some of you dispise the US, although you are not bashful about taking its money and aid, then spitting in its face and always complain that it is not enough. Just remember that the US wants to promote democracy and opportunity and that it cares infinitely more about its benevolent reputation than the Chinese do.

While you might be able to say no to and malign this great nation [USA], you certainly will not be able to do so to the Chinese, once they have moved into your country like they have done in Africa. Please remember that fact.

Glomar , ever the voice of reason, with a well measured analysis. please folks, do not count the chickens before they are hatched. do not throw Uncle Sam over the side until you are sure that there is a viable Plan B. that is not the Chinese, as Glomar reminds you that Leonel has already screwed that pooch. a little circumspection goes a long way. so, easy with the namecalling and bluster. these things have a away of coming back to bite you in the butt.

No one is throwing Uncle Sam over the side, but at the same time, wasn't Leonel invited and then rejected? They shouldn't have invited on the first place. He is our leader and whatever happens to him we feel it.
On the Chinese, no one should trust the Chinese. They only do whatever is best for them. You can see their behavior in their everyday lives. In driving, they will never let you get in front of them even if you're about to loose your exit, they're the worst drivers. In jobs especially in banking, don't you dare try to get a post. They only bank in their banks or where there is a high percentage of Chinese or Asians, in banking they do the creepiest scams one can imaging and they never get cut. Their tons of prostitutes in the tons of massage parlors never get investigated, jailed, of fined. And forget about them buying American cars. They will never buy an American car. They do well for them selves not for the rest.

Dr. Dread,

Thank you for kind words. However, with your well-founded, factual and insightful contributions, you are infinitely more worthy of being called the "voice of reason" than I'll ever be. There are other contributors to this forum as well who are also more deserving than myself.

There are many times when I've refrained from contributing to a story after reading your comments and those of others who are intellectually minded and mature sufficiently to materially contribute to the evolution of a featured story, realizing that any further statements from me or others would only be superfluous, controversial or altogether inappropriate.

Again, thanks for kind words.

I have here in my hand a list of 205 . . . a list of names that were made known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the State Department. ...
As you know, very recently the Secretary of State proclaimed his loyalty to a man guilty of what has always been considered as the most abominable of all crimes — being a traitor to the people who gave him a position of great trust — high treason. ... He has lighted the spark which is resulting in a moral uprising and will end only when the whole sorry mess of twisted, warped thinkers are swept from the national scene so that we may have a new birth of honesty and decency in government.

ridicule us and our way of life.
To your question about foreign policy the present US policy towards Cuba is a product of any years of strong Cuban diaspora republican lobbying mainly from the state of Florida. Together with old agreements with the USSR, and outdated opinions from foreign policy "experts" at state.
Tha Castro family dynasty has succeeded in always thumbing their noses at the US for other reasons as well. They come from secret agreements with Russia and Cuba going back as far as the 1960's
cold war and missile crisis.
The embargo is useless and has not worked to bring democracy to Cuba.
More mileage is extracted from the Castro family by the present "status quo" than if the embargo was lifted. But like many issues that linger from way back, when a new administration weighs the pro's and cons of lifting the embargo, they decide simply in dodging the issue since both sides are very proactive and militant, and any decision will produce untold censure and criticism.

I agree with you insofar as China’s motives and track record. As I have said before, I may not be a fan of Uncle Sam; but at least the U.S has a "tradition" of giving the "appearance" of respecting Human rights, Labour and Environmental Laws, Nation Building, etc.
China has one goal and goal only: The Economic, Political, Military and Cultural ascendency of China in the world.

As far the U.S is concerned, I would not say the U.S is "dead"; however, I find it highly unlikely they will stop or even reverse their spiral into irrelevance. The Cliché "Third World Country with Nukes" may be a bit much; but it is eerily descriptive. I would be interested to see how the U.S would get itself out of it current predicament and into a position of economic and cultural pre-eminence without a Manufacturing, Engineering & Design or Cultural base of which to speak of…

I agree with your comments above on women. When 20th century history gets properly chronicled, it must include three specific women in the top ten leaders group: Golda Meir, Indira Ghandi and Margaret Thatcher. Benazir Bhutto could have joined that elite group as well, but corruption in her govt precluded that possibility. She, however, was both very intelligent and capable and could have achieved great things for her people and nation.

And many more great women like Evita Peron, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Madame Curie, and others.
There are also many unknown women, specially in Latin America with weak child support laws, that raise and feed their children when the irresponsible male has abandoned them.
I was told an eyewitness story of a female Haitian sugar cane cutter working in the fields in the heat of the day, having a childbirth in the sugar cane field and straightening up and picking up the child with her left hand and continue her work while breast feeding him. Believe it or not.
And they say the Russians are physically and mentally tougher. There is nothing like adversity to cure entire populations of their laziness and complacency.

The only way that can happen is that everyone needs to graduate from the school of "hard knocks" We have had it way too easy for way too long. Our goal was to give our kids a better life then we had, and by doing so we brought up bunch of whining complaining spoiled brats.

A lack of discipline and no family values.

I admire the Domincan's as families stick together and help one another without conditions.

Thank MTV and Sony, Nintendo and the fast food industry for the demise of the American culture.
And the parents who allowed the above mentioned to raise their children.

So this might be part of the answer:
@
kids should ride bicycles or travel by shool bus. Or if the journey to to school is long and arduous join a donkey train as they do in Albania and Mongolia. US needs petrol rationing to correct balance of trade and its brats need the discipline of riding a bycycle.

From previous posting.
Actually it is the philosophy of waste that has caused problems for USA. Corporations waste, individuals waste, the educational system wastes. The only way they can do this is to enslave other counries; vast cattle ranches in Brazil for McDonalds, huge factories in China to produce toyes that end up in landfill in weeks. Cars consume extraordinary amounts of gas, huge mansions are maintained at 70f in the depth of winter with little insulation. This waste trashes our planet and other countries are coming round to saying 'enough is enough'.

Xmas is coming . politcially correct:
On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically imposed midwinter festival, my Significant Other in a consenting adult, monogamous relationship gave to me:

TWELVE males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming,

ELEVEN pipers piping (plus the 18-member pit orchestra made up of members in good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union contract even though they will not be asked to play a note),

TEN melanin deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling class system leaping,

NINE persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression,

EIGHT economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from enslaved Bovine-Americans,

SEVEN endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands,

SIX enslaved Fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products,

FIVE golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration,

(NOTE: after members of the Animal Liberation Front threatened to throw red paint at my computer, the calling birds, French hens and partridge have been reintroduced to their native habitat. To avoid further Animal-American enslavement, the remaining gift package has been revised.)

The truth is there is lots more dirty washing to be done before anyone in the DR is coming out with clean sheets.

well until this country becomes one........ until this country starts doing something for the world other then consuming and taking.... this couintry recieves about the most help then any other country everyday i see us american troops here doing something like medical. truth is this country only serves it self and consumes ....

With the abstention of the Dominican President from this Costa Rica meeting
there will be one less country for Joe Biden to instruct/intimidate/blackmail in the
upcoming Summit of the Americas next april 17-19, in Trinidad & Tobago.
One reason more for Pres.Lionel Fernandez. to embrace the South –South trade philosophy
and try wrestling his Country away from the Empire. Que viva,
. Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales and Nicaraguas Daniel Ortega
both deciding to send envoy on more or less the same level(deputy minister and vice president and deputy foreign minsiter), as Joe Biden. The US backyard is awakening and so must the OAS
while the credit for this awakening.................................................goes to CHAVEZ

Gringo 1, dont assume you know where I live. Our country has been learning English for how long now? Again, where has it gotten us? Of course English is widely used but the Chinese will become more and more involved in all international business. As their products and more importantly their money starts reaching every corner of the globe. The opportunities are much greater for Westerners who can speak Chinese as it is a complex language to learn. "The Heritage Foundation" Is not a credible source as it is a right wing propoganda tool.

Jacirez, Is it wrong to sell arms to Zimbabwe? Probably. But Iam also sure that the story is not totally like the Western media has potrayed it, there are always two sides. Especially when the news is coming from former colonial occupiers. Foreign goverments cannot remove leaders in another country, the native people must do it. The US and Europe have done much more despicable acts in Africa for much longer than the Chinese.

On Sudan, yes the International court issued that warrant but the Arab League and many other countries dont recognize it. To say that the chinese actively support the killng of innocent civilians is wrong. They have the policy of not getting involved in the internal issues of other countries which I think is right. They were definitely wrong when it came to the Racist Apartheid in S.Africa but they were not alone. Also, this is a great chance to praise our Cuban brothers who shed blood in order to defeat racism in Africa.

Speaking with my African colleagues here in China they have not seen the Chinese investment as the nightmare the Western media has described. The people are what matter and China is helping to build Africa based on mutual respect and benefits.

As for Tibet yeah I agree they are really being pig headed and wrong in their policy there. However, when you learn about the history between Tibet and China they are very close. They should reconcile with the Dalai Lama and let him back in, he has stated many times he does not seek Independence. Human rights! Please! The lone super power is carrying out a murderous pointless war that has killed hundreds of thousands of truly innocent civilians. It is also carrying out an illegal blockade on Cuba for the last 50 years. Human rights?!! Not to mention supported countless dictators and sold them weapons to suppress the population just in Latin America alone! So lets not point the finger at one guy and forget history and current events here.

Poponlaburra: "On the Chinese, no one should trust the Chinese. They only do whatever is best for them" Yeah ok!? Everyone does whats best for them. Poponlaburra: "And forget about them buying American cars. They will never buy an American car. They do well for themselves not for the rest." Ha! GM in China is the only thing keeping that company alive! They love like Buicks here, terrible taste in my opinion

The point is the Chinese will never inflict the pillaging that Europe and the US have wrought. Why? Because they have felt this misery themselves, So when they sit at the table, they know how to talk not dictate. Are the they saints? No! But when you compare their history when it come to invading and occupying its far better than West. Human Rights, yes they have their problems. But at least they have kept it to abusing the rights of their own people not murdering, enslaving and destroying the lands of other people. Mirame soy como el Capitan Chino aqui, haha
