Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic will plunge into darkness tonight with many of its famous landmarks and places switching off to mark Earth Hour.
Thousands of households and businesses nationwide will join a billion people or more across the globe in solidarity to turn off
non-essential lights for the one hour campaign aimed at raising
awareness on global climate change.
This is Dominican Republic's first participation in the event initiated by
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) since it started in Australia in 2007.
At
8:30 p.m. local time, everyone on the planet is being asked to show
their support by turning
off their lights for one hour. Though largely a symbolic act, the
amount of energy saved through this effort will not be insignificant.
As part of the iniciative, Dominican singer Audrey Campos is inviting everyone to Hard Rock Cafe Santo Domingo, in the Colonial Zone, where she will go acoustic tonight at 8:30 p.m.

DR has clearly elevated Earth Hour to an olympic sport level.....they have been preparing and practicing for decades to captured the treasured "gold medal".
Go Dr-show rest of world how it's done!!! Why do just one hour, when you could endure 24? We are clearly best in class and lead all others in this important area.

Simply another salient instance of Dominican elite-wanabe pompousness in trying to exhibit relevance in meaningless liberal undertakings.
They should instead expend their efforts to do opposite: assure predictable and constant supply of electrical energy to bring about business, educational and quality of life prosperity. Of course, they should pay for electricity-which should be provided by private sector and removed from gov't strong and far-reaching and corrupt tentacles.
What fools!!!

Actually, allthough in the DR we do have prologned "Earth Hours" every day, the carbon footprint increases substantially when this happens. All the private electric generators generate a lot more pollution, not to mention the consumption of full and the resources needed to produce and transport them here to the DR.
