Santo Domingo.– Armed Forces Minister Rafael Pena said that drug trafficking threatens national security and the nation's institutions for it damages society and its leaders, creating a culture of terror and crime.

According to Pena, the vulnerability of the border with Haiti is a constant concern for security and defense bodies, given Haiti’s permanent poverty situation and the poverty of Dominicans who live along the border.

“There is a need to work together so we can increase security and control drug trafficking, weapons and daily crimes,” he pointed out in a speech at conference at the Dominican College of Engineers and Architects.

Clearly, with so many govt civilian and military officials in cahoots with Dominican builders, implicitly protecting and encouraging the influx of Haitian workers, I find this statement of security laughable. The influx will continue because the “captains and the kings” want it to and, until they decide it no longer suits their needs, it will continue unimpeded. In a way, this is tantamount to modern day slavery, with tacit govt support.

As for drug situation, it seems to me that much of the trade is effected by air and sea; in fact, it seems to me that there may be as much drug flowing westward to Haiti as there may be flowing eastward. Think about it, if the problem is land-based, then why do we need those expensive "Super Tucanos"? I think this is just a smoke screen, to try to appease an increasingly annoyed populace.
